Free Valentine’s Day Reading Challenge for Kids

Are your kids up for a little Valentine’s Day Reading challenge during the month of February? I’ve got a great resource for you!
We love to read, but I’m still always looking for creative ways to make it more fun – and reading challenges surrounding a special day can definitely bring out a little friendly competition in our family! They are also a great way to encourage and motivate a reluctant reader this time of year.
I’m looking forward to doing this Valentine’s Day Reading Challenge with my kids in our homeschool, and I’m excited to share it with you, too!
As you make your lesson plans and think about Valentine’s Day activities to do with your kids, make sure to include reading! My Valentine’s Day Reading challenge is the perfect way to do this.
Grab the free printable pages and recording sheets at the end of this post, then stock up on some books at your local library to enjoy some family Valentine’s Day reading together.
Valentine’s Day Reading Kit Printable
I would recommend beginning the challenge with your kids on January 30th. They can then try to check off one box each day, and they’ll finish with the last box (reading a book on Valentine’s Day, February 14th).
Some of the other challenges on the printable include:
- Read a book with hearts on the cover
- Read a book about a family
- Read a book while enjoying your favorite treat
- Read a book with your favorite stuffed animal
- Read a book with “love” in the title
If you are part of a homeschool co-op, you might even assign this challenge to small groups of friends. Make it a friendly competition to see which group can collectively read the most books this month and check them off on their charts.
It’s up to you to decide if you’d like to offer your kids prizes or goodie bags when they finish the challenge (but prizes also make this a lot more fun!). A small box of candy hearts is a great incentive for my kids!
As they read each book, your kids can fill out the title and their rating of the book on the included reading log. This will be a great keepsake for your homeschool portfolio.
You’ll also find some cute Valentine’s Day bookmarks included in the printable. Your kids can decorate them, or use them as-is. I recommend printing them on cardstock if you don’t plan on laminating them for durability.
Another great idea is to have your kids write notes on the bookmarks and use them for Valentine’s Day cards!
Scripture Verses on Love
Not only does this printable include a Valentine’s Day Reading Challenge board, but there is a list of scripture verses on love that is perfect addition to your family devotional time leading up to Valentine’s Day. What better way to learn about love than through God’s Word?
I recommend reading and focusing on just one of the scriptures per day. You might choose to use the verse as copywork, or memorize the verse as a family.

I love this idea! I have it printed, bookmarks are cut out and I am excited to do this with my grands. I think I will even challenge them to find a themed book at a thrift store, read it and pass it forward to a Little Free Library.
