Are you looking for a fun Halloween activity you can use in your homeschool this spooky season? My free printable Halloween writing prompts activity is sure to be a hit!

You know I’m a fan of writing prompts. They help give our kids focused opportunities to practice their writing, work on specific skills, and stretch their creativity.

This activity is a “writing prompt with a twist”, and your kids are going to love creating a Halloween story this year.

Your kids will love creating a Halloween-themed story with this FREE Roll & Write Activity. Grab the printable, dice, and a pencil, and let those creative juices flow!

Grab the free printable at the bottom of the post, and maybe some of your favorite Halloween candy to munch on. Your kids will determine their writing fate with the roll of a die!

Halloween Roll and Write Activity

What is a roll and write activity?

Basically, your kids will roll a die three times to help them build the pieces of a short story: once to determine the character, once for their plot, and a third time for the setting of their story. They’ll match the number on the die with the correct item in each column.

You’ll want to print out a copy of the writing activity for each of your kids, as the free printable includes a writing organizer page and two lined pages your kids can use to write out and illustrate their final creative story.

Why Use Halloween Journal Prompts?

Using story starters and writing activities for kids like these is a fun way to motivate reluctant writers, and can take the pressure away from staring at blank paper.

Not only will they have their character, plot, and setting ready to go, the Writing Organizer sheet will help your kids organize the details of their story during the brainstorming phase.

They’ll be guided to give more information about their character and the setting, as well as create a problem and formulate a solution. Planning using graphic organizers is a great habit to get into before simply jumping in to writing a story.

Help your kids write a rough draft, revise, proofread, and publish their final copy on the included pages. Add a Halloween color page if they’d like (or use this with younger kiddos while your older kids write). You’ll have a wonderful Halloween theme keepsake to add to their homeschool portfolios!

More Halloween Writing Ideas

You can also use these writing prompts in different ways – feel free to get creative!

For example, instead of writing a story, you could have your child write a Halloween-inspired poem in different forms (acrostic poem, rhyming poem, etc.).

You might also challenge them to write one story as a scary story, then roll the die again to create a goofy story.

In addition to this Halloween roll and write activity, here are some Halloween writing prompts you can use to inspire your kids:

  • Write your own spooky recipe for a magic potion.
  • Describe what your Halloween costume will be this year and tell a little bit about what you are dressing up as.
  • Tell about your favorite trick-or-treating memory.
  • The pumpkin you just carved began speaking to you all-of-a-sudden! What does it say, and how do you react?
