We’re 22 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.

Have you ever noticed how quickly a bad thought can take your homeschool day off the rails?

Whether it’s self-doubt, frustration, or flat-out lies from the enemy, our thoughts have a powerful impact on how we teach, parent, and live each day.

This week in the Homeschool Prayer Challenge, we’re reflecting on the battle that begins in our minds—and how we can fight it rightly, with God’s truth.

Negative thoughts can sneak in and shape the atmosphere of our homeschool more than we realize. This week, we’re reflecting on how to take every thought captive to Christ—aligning our mindset with God’s truth so we can walk in peace, not frustration. Let’s talk about how to fight the battle in our minds with faith and intentional prayer.

When Our Thoughts Derail Us

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I think about. My thoughts can easily spiral—worrying about unfinished lessons, condemning myself for being impatient, or doubting if I’m even doing this homeschool thing “right.”

And instead of bringing those thoughts to the Lord, I often try to fix them myself.

But temporary fixes don’t last. The negative thoughts always come back.

2 Corinthians 10:5 reminds us that we are called to take every thought captive to obey Christ. Paul wrote this while confronting division in the church at Corinth, and he was urging believers to fight spiritual battles with spiritual weapons—not worldly ones.

He knew that wrong thinking leads to disobedience, and that victory starts with renewing our minds.

A Real-Life Homeschool Example

Recently, I found out one of my kids hadn’t done any of their math work for three days…even though they told me it was done.

Before I even spoke to them, my mind was flooded with frustration and disappointment. I didn’t pause. I didn’t pray. I just reacted.

Was my child wrong to lie? Yes. But I was also wrong in how I responded—and it started with the thoughts I allowed to take root.

What if, instead, I had paused to evaluate those thoughts in light of scripture? What if I had remembered Colossians 3:12: “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

The conversation still needed to happen, but my reaction could’ve looked a lot more like Jesus.

Winning the Battle of the Mind

The truth is, we can choose to think differently.

We can ask the Holy Spirit to help us stop a negative thought in its tracks, examine it, and replace it with truth.

That’s how we take thoughts captive. And we do it with God’s Word.

Some practical ways to get started:

  • Memorize scripture that speaks to the lies you often believe.
  • Pray throughout your day, especially when you notice your thoughts going astray.
  • Surround yourself with truth—in music, books, community, and the Word.
  • Model this for your kids. Let them see you struggling, surrendering, and seeking God’s truth.

The negative thoughts may still come. But we don’t have to let them stay.

A Prayer for This Week

Heavenly Father,

So often as I go through the week, I allow my thoughts to dwell on lies that are not from You. I let my thoughts affect my day, and our homeschool atmosphere. So badly I want to take these thoughts captive, release them to you, and trade them for truth you have given me.

I want to honor you with my thoughts, and keep them pure, lovely, true, honorable, and obedient. Reveal to me this week the lies that I am believing, the strongholds that are weighing me down, and show me how to be set free with the truth of scripture.

I’m so thankful that I do not have to rely on weapons of this world to defeat the enemy. Thank you for loving me, for loving my family, and for making your divine power available when we trust in you. Help me to lean on you more and more each day, to trust you more, and put you first in our home and homeschool.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
