Every year our homeschool looks a little different—and this year, I’m making a shift toward a more structured daily and weekly routine.

In the past, we’ve followed a pretty flexible approach, but I’ve been feeling the need to create a better rhythm for our days, especially as my kids get older and our curriculum load grows.

So today, I’m sharing how I created our homeschool schedule for the upcoming year, why I made the changes I did, and how I’m hoping it will help us have a smoother, more productive year.

After years of keeping our homeschool routine flexible, I’m shifting gears and adding a little more structure to our days. This year, I’m planning a consistent daily and weekly schedule that balances independent work with group learning—and gives us a rhythm that actually works.

Why We’re Moving Toward a More Structured Homeschool Schedule

For many years, we used a loose routine. I’d give each of my kids their assignments in Homeschool Planet, and as long as they completed everything for the day, it didn’t matter exactly when they did it.

This worked really well when they were younger.

But now that we have a mix of independent subjects and teacher-led group lessons, that flexible approach has started to cause some hiccups.

I’ve noticed frustration when we’d start our group work at different times each day—often waiting on someone to finish something else or just getting a late start in the morning.

One of my kids especially thrives on routine, and I realized that having consistent times for certain parts of our homeschool day (especially group learning) could really help all of us stay focused and on track.

How I Created Our Weekly Homeschool Plan

If you’re a visual person like me, sometimes it helps to see the planning process in action.

In the video below, I walk through exactly how I created our weekly homeschool schedule—looking at our curriculum, mapping out our days, and building a routine that (hopefully!) works for our family.

If you’re working on your own plan, grab a cup of coffee and follow along—you might just pick up a few ideas for your homeschool too!

Is It Perfect? Probably Not. But It’s a Start.

I’m the first to admit that no homeschool schedule is ever perfect. I’ve got the best of intentions, but we all know that life happens. We might end up making changes partway through the year—and that’s okay!

But having this plan in place gives us a strong foundation. I can see how our curriculum fits together, I know what to expect each day, and my kids will have the consistency they need to thrive.

If you’re trying to create your homeschool schedule, don’t stress about getting it all right the first time. Start with what you know—your family’s needs, your curriculum requirements, and what kind of rhythm works best for your season. Then tweak it as you go.

Even a simple routine can make a big difference in how your days flow. You don’t have to plan every minute—just give yourself enough structure to make things run a little more smoothly.
