For homeschool families, finding a comprehensive health curriculum that aligns with their values and beliefs can be a daunting task. I want everything we study in our homeschool to reflect the glory of God, as He created it all – including our bodies. This should impact how I teach my kids about physical health and wellness. I want them to not simply learn the basics of nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, but to understand how they are fearfully and wonderfully made by God (Psalm 139:14), to develop a reverence for their bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and recognize the responsibility to care for their bodies in God-honoring ways.

Why choose a homeschool health curriculum?

I’ll admit, it’s easy not to think about health education for our homeschools, because it’s one more thing to add to our already busy schedules (amiright mamas?).

Not only can it be tough to find a health curriculum that is easy to integrate into our days, but as I mentioned above, it’s challenging to find one that’s grounded in a Biblical worldview.

Because, let’s face it.  Kids everywhere are fed a lot of misinformation these days regarding their health.  And what some public schools are teaching students nowadays in health is just plain wrong.

Sometimes, it seems that teaching kids how to live healthy lives is at the bottom of the priority list in our culture.  And certainly, God’s design for our bodies and health is not often considered.

I’d say that’s a pretty important connection for our kids to make, though, don’t you agree? Especially when they are going to come up against all sorts of conflicting thoughts and ideas.

We want to equip them with the objective truth that exists about our health and bodies so they not only can live healthy lives, but know why taking care of their health is important in the first place.

Using a good, structured health curriculum rather than just “winging it” will help you ensure important health topics are covered systematically and thoroughly. A health and nutrition curriculum can also offer a wealth of well-researched resources, activities, and assessments, saving you valuable time and effort in planning and sourcing materials.

Keep these things in mind

When looking for a homeschool health curriculum with a Biblical worldview, there are few considerations to keep in mind to help you make your choice:

Scripture alignment. Look for a curriculum that incorporates relevant Scriptures, explores biblical perspectives on various health topics, and encourages students to apply biblical values in their daily lives.

A comprehensive approach. Your homeschool health curriculum should cover a wide range of health topics, including physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It should address areas such as proper nutrition, exercise, personal hygiene, emotional intelligence, stress management, relationships, and sexual purity, all from a biblical perspective.

Age appropriateness. Consider the age and developmental stage of your children. Look for a curriculum that provides age-appropriate content, activities, and discussions, ensuring that the material is engaging and accessible to your children at their respective grade level.

Think about your availability and preferences in terms of teaching and facilitating the lessons.

Resources and materials. Evaluate the curriculum’s resources, including textbooks, workbooks, supplementary materials, and online resources. Ensure that they are well-researched, accurate, age-appropriate, and engaging for your children. You’ll also want to make sure you have the proper equipment and/or technology available to deliver the lessons.

Support. Finally, it’s worth considering whether the curriculum offers opportunities for community engagement, such as online forums, support groups, or access to experienced educators who can provide guidance and answer questions related to the curriculum’s biblical worldview. It’s also helpful to have an avenue to connect with other parents who are teaching the curriculum or have taught it in the past.
