I have met and talked to many moms who have a story similar to mine regarding their faith journey. I grew up going to church and memorizing scripture verses for Sunday School. I did everything that – looking in from the outside – I was “supposed” to do.
By the world’s standards, I was a model Christian. I was oblivious to the fact that something was severely lacking, as I set my Bible on the shelf each week to wait for next Sunday to roll around.
It wasn’t until I was over 30 years old that Jesus truly grabbed ahold of my heart and revealed to me the truth I was missing that was right in front of me all along. I remember sitting in a Proverbs Bible study my best friend was leading. I figured that I would walk away with some “good advice” on how to live my life – instead, I finished the study completely in awe of what God has revealed to us in His Word that I never even realized was there during all of my years as a “Christian”.
And, with three young kids at that time, I was convicted with the realization of the eternal importance of my role in their lives. God had blessed me with these beautiful kids to teach and train – I realized that I didn’t want them to go through their lives with just a surface-level understanding of the Bible. I didn’t want them to just know of God; I knew I desired for them to love Him with all of their hearts, minds, souls, and strength.
Because the Bible is the way God communicates with us, it is absolutely essential we are reading the Bible with our kids, and helping them develop this discipline.
But how exactly do we (as busy moms!) help our kids do this? How do we discipline ourselves when our days are already filled to the brim? Isn’t the Bible too hard for our kids to read and understand when they are young? I’m still learning everything myself and don’t have all the answers – how am I supposed to teach my kids the Bible?

In her book Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible, Danika Cooley helps parents navigate these fears. After reading, you will be encouraged that you CAN teach the Bible to their kids, why you SHOULD be building this habit, and you’ll have a plan of action you can implement immediately with your family.

Raising Our Kids for Christ
I love reading books written by relatable authors; moms who have lived the stages we are walking through and have practical, meaningful, Godly wisdom to share.
Danika Cooley is definitely one of those women. She is a homeschooling mom of four who has a heart for empowering other parents to raise their kids for Christ through her books and homeschool curriculum.

When I began reading Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible, I felt encouraged even after just the introduction. Well, first, I felt convicted that I had been using some of the excuses above to keep me from reading the Bible regularly with my kids. But Danika gives a wake-up call to parents to pay attention to what really matters, and make time for meaningful, diligent study of the Bible with our kids.
Successfully Teach the Bible to Your Kids
Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible is broken down into three parts that will help you create a Bible reading plan for your family, help you begin to confidently handle God’s Word, and give you fun and effective tools to use during your family Bible time.
Part One: You’re the Leader
In this part of the book, Danika helps you take a close look at your daily routines and current efforts to make Bible study a habit with your kids (get ready for that wake-up call!).
What I love is that she is not condemning; as someone who has been there, she offers guidance and strategies for reading the Bible with our kids, and reminds us that we can trust the Holy Spirit with all of our efforts.
You’ll learn some strategies for reading the Bible during your kids’ different developmental stages, how to “anchor” your Bible reading time (we started doing this immediately!), and realize you don’t need to make any more excuses to get started.
Part Two: Faithful Reading
Part two is all about helping you understand the main themes of the Bible, and how to convey these clearly to your kids as you read together. Danika wants to encourage you that reading scripture is not too hard for your kids. She writes: “Scripture isn’t a book of code…it is God’s revelation to us.” He wants us to learn about Him through His Word – that’s why He gave it to us. How reassuring this is!
You’ll finish this section with an understanding of the big picture message of the Bible, tips for teaching your kids how to read and interpret each genre, and how to avoid common Bible-reading mis-steps (I know I’ve made a few at times).
Be ready to jot down the suggestions for discussion questions you can ask your kids during your reading time. One of the ideas she shares is to create Bible reading cheat sheet cards your kids can use as bookmarks in their bibles. You can either make your own, or print off Danika’s template here.
Part Three: A Daily Walk
The final part of the book will leave you with a lot of suggestions for ways to engage your child during your time spent reading the Bible, and tips to help them establish spiritual habits that will last a lifetime.
I, personally, am not super creative when it comes to this type of thing – so I really appreciated all of the suggestions and resources shared here. I felt capable of implementing some new ideas into our family routine after reading this section.
There are a lot of ideas shared, so I think it’s important to remember that you should tailor your time to what suits your family, and not feel bad if you don’t do all the things.
Danika’s ideas are simple, do-able, age-appropriate, and fun. She realizes common struggles moms often have (such as teaching to different learning styles and multiple age-levels, or having little ones running around during Bible time) and suggests how to handle them. As woven throughout the book, the reassurance is there that God will bless our efforts to teach His Word to our children (no matter how small we think those efforts may be).

Final Thoughts
It’s been about 5 years since that fateful Proverbs Bible study I participated in that truly changed my life. I am continually learning and soaking up information on how to not only read and learn the Bible myself, but how to raise my kids to be adults that love the Lord and His Word. I think that this is a book that every parent should have in their toolkit.
I figured we were doing pretty good this year with our spiritual walk. We have a Bible curriculum we love (but admittedly, was often one of the first things to get set aside if our day got “too busy”). We prayed as a family (maybe a little inconsistently…). We gathered each Sunday to go to church, and participated in a Bible memory club, but rarely (ok, almost never) sat down to dig into God’s Word as a family in our home.
Danika’s book really challenged me to re-think these “pretty good” attitudes towards our family’s spiritual habits. Reading her book gave me a much-needed kick; it helped me realize that investing more time and energy into teaching my kids the Bible is worthwhile, and necessary if I want to raise my kids to know and love Christ.
We’ve already made some significant changes these past few weeks based on her advice. The habits are already beginning to stick. And you know what? My kids are loving reading and learning the Bible.
I know that you will be blessed by this book as well. Go grab your copy of Help Your Kids Learn & Love the Bible today!
