Think back on the lessons you covered in your homeschool last week – which one was your favorite? Does anything stick out to you about how your week went?

We struggled last week – it happens. We are nearing the end of the school year and motivation for schoolwork is starting to wane. I had a big workload and deadlines for my business, my husband started a new job, and there just weren’t enough hours in the day (are there ever?).

In reality, the frustrations I face often occur when I don’t have my priorities straight. I begin to have a bad attitude, complain, feel entitled to how I “want” things to go.

We got through most of our “schoolwork” last week. But when I think back to the lessons I probably taught my kids about how to behave under pressure, and where our focus should be kept, I admit that I fell far short.

I was brushing my teeth the other morning, and my two-year old toddler wanted to join me (he LOVES brushing his teeth). I noticed how he copied pretty much everything I did, glancing at me to learn how he should take care of his teeth; looking up to me for direction.

It was super cute. And it reminded me that I was given to my kids to be their role model. I have an opportunity as I homeschool them day in and out, to live my life in a way that points them to Christ.

Heaven & Harvard

I saw a meme on another homeschool page this week that said, “As a parent, it’s my priority to get you into Heaven, not Harvard.” As most social media posts do, this one had lots of people agreeing and just as many with something negative to say.

I like the overall message. I take from it that we need to keep an eternal perspective in all we do. We can teach the best academic lessons to our kids each day, but if we neglect their spiritual lives we have greatly missed the boat.

What NOT to Leave Out When Choosing Homeschool Curriculum

The best lesson our kids will learn is the message of the gospel, which we can weave throughout our homeschooling. Not only through our curriculum, but by our actions.

We need to look to Jesus daily – He is our greatest role model and example! And when we mess up (as I do so often), we can use those opportunities to share how we are all sinners in need of a savior, and Jesus is that savior.

Let’s pray this week that we will keep our priorities straight in what we have been called to do, and follow Christ’s example in our actions and attitudes as we homeschool.

Prayer For This Week

Heavenly Father,

When I think about the perfect example for our lives you have given us through Jesus, I am in awe of you. I so desire to be a shining example of your love to my kids, but every day I fall short.

Forgive me for any unkind words I have spoken this week. For any bad attitudes, harsh tones, or any way I have disobeyed you. Show me the areas I need to grow and improve, so that our homeschool is pleasing to you.

I don’t want anything to get in the way of your power working through me. It’s only by keeping my focus on You that I can set a good example for my kids; help me to keep my priorities straight. And as I love and take care of my kids – serving, teaching, and spending time with them – let my actions point them to Jesus, our perfect example, so that they may know and have a relationship with Him.

Thank you for loving me anyway, and for your presence in our homeschool.

In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

This Week’s Printable

Each week, I put together a short devotional you can print out with prompts and reflective questions to help keep you in the Word daily. There’s also a sheet with the weekly prayer on it you can print and hang in your homeschool room.

It’s my hope that this printable helps serve as a reminder to be in God’s Word each day, praying and seeking His will for your life and homeschool.

Hi Sara! My name is Sarah also. I just started homeschooling my kids this school year 23-24. I was wondering if you had any suggestions of what if any tests are available for me to purchase for my kids. So I can see if they are learning and at the level they should be? Thanks and I hope to hear back from you!

    1. Hi Sarah! Thanks so much for reading! I don’t know of any specific tests, but, many curricula often have placement tests that can help you best place your kids. What curriculum are you using? Feel free to reach out with any other questions!
