How to Teach Kindness and Generosity to Your Kids

Do you ever notice how we don’t have to teach our kids to be selfish? It’s part of our sinful nature, and it comes way too naturally sometimes (for us adults too, let’s be honest). 

Instead, we have to be intentional about helping our kids build character traits such as kindness, compassion, empathy and selflessness. 

And in a world where a culture of self-absorption often takes center stage, homeschooling provides an opportunity for us to nurture seeds of generosity in our kids. What an invaluable gift we can give them!

Being around our kids all day can provide many opportunities for “teachable moments” in this area, for sure.

But sometimes, you might want (or need) a little bit more guidance in how to train your kids in Christ-like generosity.

While I was at the Teach Them Diligently Homeschool Convention this year, I stopped by the Generous Family Booth, and I was really impressed by their Generous Students Homeschool Curriculum Kit.

Most often we think of generosity in terms of giving money or personal belongings.

Generosity with thoughts – We can teach our kids to take every thought captive, and think about themselves and others in generous ways.

Generosity with words – How are our kids speaking to other people, or speaking about themselves? What does the Bible say about how we are to use our words?

Generosity with time – We can be generous in how we use the time we are blessed with each day.

Generosity with attention – Confession time – I know I need work here! We can be generous in the way we are fully present and focused on others when we are with them.

Generosity with influence – Finally, we can be generous in how we use our connections to help others.

A few things that stuck out to me right away about this kit (aside from the concept of intentionally teaching Biblical generosity) was:

Why Should We Teach Generosity?

For starters, there are many passages in the Bible that emphasize the importance of generosity, for the benefit of others and also for spiritual growth. Christians are encouraged to be selfless, share resources, and demonstrate love and compassion towards others.

Teaching kids to be generous is an important part of our parenting for several other reasons as well:

Fostering empathy: Generosity helps children develop empathy by encouraging them to consider the needs and feelings of others. When kids engage in acts of kindness and generosity, they learn to understand and appreciate the perspectives of others, which can lead to stronger relationships and a more compassionate worldview.

Cultivating gratitude: Generosity encourages children to recognize and appreciate what they have, leading to a sense of gratitude. By teaching kids to give to others, we help them understand that they are fortunate and that it’s important to share their blessings with those in need.

Building character: Being generous builds character traits such as kindness, compassion, and selflessness. These qualities contribute to the overall development of a child’s personality and can have a positive impact on their relationships, both now and in the future.

Promoting social responsibility: Teaching kids about generosity instills a sense of social responsibility. When children learn to share and give to others, they understand their role in making the world a better place. This understanding can motivate them to take actions that positively impact their communities and society as a whole.

Enhancing happiness and well-being: Studies have shown that engaging in acts of generosity and helping others can increase happiness and overall well-being. Teaching children to be generous can contribute to their own emotional and psychological well-being, fostering a positive outlook on life.

Developing essential life skills: Being generous requires skills such as empathy, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making. By encouraging acts of generosity, parents and educators help children develop these important life skills, which can benefit them in various aspects of their lives, including their personal relationships and future careers.

Overall, teaching our kids to be generous not only benefits others but also has a positive impact on their own personal growth, happiness, and ability to contribute positively to society.

I was excited to get started with this curriculum, mainly because it’s low- to no-prep, and it doesn’t take much time!

You could easily add the Generous Students Curriculum to your homeschool morning routine, do it during your lunch break, or even in the evening after dinner.

We have been working through the curriculum to finish out our homeschool day; it’s a nice way to wrap things up!

Learning about the different Generosity heroes is inspiring, and one of my kids’ favorite parts of the curriculum. 

Having a resource to help teach my kids to live more generously is helping me be more intentional about doing this, and really helps drive these messages home. Plus, teaching my kids a Biblical perspective on generosity is important to me; it can be time-consuming to try to create lessons and resources on my own, and pull everything together.
