We’re 24 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.

This week in the Homeschool Prayer Challenge, we’re focusing on one of Jesus’ most well-known parables—the Parable of the Sower—and praying that our hearts, and the hearts of our children, would be good soil for God’s Word to take root and flourish.

What kind of soil are we cultivating in our homeschool? In Week 24 of the Homeschool Prayer Challenge, we’re reflecting on the Parable of the Sower and praying that our children’s hearts will be ready to receive and grow in God’s Word. Be encouraged to keep sowing truth—even when you don’t see immediate fruit—and trust the Lord to bring the harvest in His perfect timing.

When Good Advice Doesn’t Stick

Have you ever given your child a solid piece of wisdom…only for them to immediately do the opposite?

Yep, me too.

And honestly, I can’t really blame them. How often do I do the same thing—hear godly advice or even read God’s Word—and still go my own way, thinking I know best?

That’s why this week’s Scripture, Luke 8:1-15, hit home for me.

The Faithful Sower

Jesus’ parable describes four types of soil: hard, rocky, thorny, and good. The seed, representing the Word of God, is scattered on each type. What stood out to me most this time was how faithful and generous God is in sowing His Word—even when He knows the ground isn’t ideal.

Unlike my abandoned backyard garden project (because of disappointing results!), God never gives up sowing. He keeps planting His Word in our hearts and in the hearts of our children.

That encourages me to keep going too—to keep sowing truth into my kids’ lives even when I don’t immediately see results. Even when they don’t seem to be listening, or when I’m discouraged by their behavior. God’s Word is never ineffective—it’s our hearts that need tending.

Praying for Hearts That Receive

This week, I’m praying for faithfulness in my own obedience to teach God’s Word, and that my children’s hearts would be cultivated and prepared to receive it:

  • That they would have humble, teachable hearts
  • That the enemy wouldn’t be able to snatch away the Word
  • That they wouldn’t be distracted by the world
  • That the Word would take root, grow strong, and bear fruit in their lives

It’s such a blessing to be able to use our homeschooling time to plant seeds of truth. May we continue to sow, water, and nurture our children’s faith, trusting God with the growth!

A Prayer for This Week

Heavenly Father,

You are a loving and faithful God. Thank you for revealing yourself to me through your Word, and for planting the seeds of your Word in my heart.

I want to think that my heart is like good soil, but so often, it is not. I’m so sorry for the times I have heard your Word, yet ignored it; for the times I have allowed worldly distractions to keep me from being an effective witness. I truly desire for the seeds of your Word to grow and multiply in my life, producing a great harvest.

And let the hearts of my children be good soil, too. May they always receive your Word joyfully, soak it in, and take it seriously. Let our homeschool habits and routines help sow deep roots in their lives that they may bear much fruit for Christ.

Guard our family from the enemy who tries to keep the word from growing in our hearts. Help my kids grow into strong, courageous workers for your kingdom, who are faithful to share your Word with others and plant those seeds.

In Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen.
