Homeschool Prayer Challenge Week 33: Dwell on These Things

We’ve all had those moments in homeschooling where doubt creeps in and whispers lies into our hearts:

“I’m a failure because my child isn’t reading yet.”
“I can’t teach math, so I must be failing.”
“My kids are going to fall behind.”

I’ve talked before about common lies homeschooling moms believe—and why they simply aren’t true. While I only covered a few in that video, the reality is there are so many lies that can take over our thoughts, leading to frustration, fear, and overwhelm.

This week, I want to remind you that those lies are from the enemy—not from our loving, compassionate Heavenly Father. God’s truth tells a completely different story.

Negative thoughts can easily take over our homeschooling days, leaving us feeling like failures. In Week 33 of the Homeschool Prayer Challenge, we’re looking at Philippians 4:8 and learning how to replace those lies with God’s truth. Discover practical steps to shift your focus, dwell on what is pure and lovely, and trust God’s plan for your homeschool.

The Power of What We Dwell On

Philippians 4:8 gives us a clear filter for our thoughts:

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Some translations say “dwell” on these things. To dwell means to think about something for a long time. So—what have you been dwelling on lately?

If you’re like me, it’s easy to get stuck in a loop of negativity, replaying challenges or failures in your mind. And honestly? Sometimes it can feel good to stay there, because it brings attention or sympathy. But God cares about our thoughts, and He calls us to take them captive (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Dwelling on what is good isn’t about ignoring hard things. It’s about choosing to focus on what is true, lovely, and praiseworthy—believing that God is good, that He can be trusted, and that His plan for our homeschool is perfect, even when it doesn’t match ours.

A Practical Step for This Week

Here’s something you can try:

  1. Write down the lies you’ve been believing about yourself, your kids, or your homeschool.
  2. Find a truth to replace each one—a Scripture verse, a promise from God, or a reminder of His faithfulness.
  3. Choose to dwell on the truth, returning to it whenever the lie creeps back in.

This takes practice, but over time, you’ll start to recognize negative thought patterns more quickly and redirect them toward God’s promises.

A Prayer for This Week

Heavenly Father,

You are perfect and holy, beyond what I can comprehend. Thank you for your goodness and your grace in my life. Thank you for creating me in your image, for giving me a mind that can think, learn, grow, and understand your love more each day.

With this mind, there are so many lies that I can allow myself to believe. Help me to not lean on my own understanding, and instead know that you will guide and direct me this week. You only are completely true, noble, pure, admirable and praiseworthy – let me set my mind on you, and stay focused on your glory and work in my life, rather than lies from the enemy.

Transform my thoughts this week with the help of your Holy Spirit. Let me be a blessing to my family, and let your light shine through me as we walk through our homeschool week.
