As a kid, it took me a long time to try the sweet treat everyone calls “Puppy Chow” or “Muddy Buddies”. I had absolutely no good reason for not trying it, other than that it was named after dog food and dirt, so I figured it must be disgusting.
I was one of those incredibly picky eaters (drove my mom crazy, I’m sure!).
Well, luckily at some point I got over my irrational viewpoint and love Puppy Chow now – eating it and making it with my kids!
I mean, Chex cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar…what’s not to love?
If you’re ready to take this great treat to the next level, you’ve got to try my Christmas Chex Mix recipe this holiday season. We put a twist on the classic sweet snack mix and use a perfect combination of white chocolate, pretzels, red and green M&M, and candy canes to create a delicious holiday dessert.
Your kids will have a blast helping you make this festive snack, and packaging it to gift to friends and family (if you can manage not to eat it all yourselves!).
Perfect Holiday Treat
I love how pretty this Christmas snack mix is! With the hint of chocolate and mint, this sweet and salty combo tastes like the holidays, and you’ll love sharing it with your family this time of the year.
It’s also the perfect dessert to take to a holiday party or Christmas party, and you’ll also be able to wrap up these Christmas goodies in small mason jars to give as gifts (just add a cute gift tag and ribbon, and you’re good to go!).
This salty Christmas Chex mix is different because it uses melted white chocolate instead (and you can actually taste the chocolate because the peanut butter is not too overpowering).
If you love your milk chocolate, though, don’t worry – the M&M’s add a nice touch here. Trust me, all the different flavors come together so beautifully for the perfect holiday treat!
How to Make White Chocolate Christmas Chex Mix
Crush the Candy Canes
The kids will love this part! Slightly crush 4 candy canes in a ziplock bag using a rolling pin.
Pro tip: your kids will be tempted to pulverize the candy canes – make sure they stop when they have small chunks. Don’t get too close to a powder (you’ve been warned).
If you have a handy dandy food chopper, this also works really well for this job, and is maybe more fun than a rolling pin.
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine 6 cups of Chex Mix cereal and 2 cups of mini pretzels. You’ll be adding all your other ingredients to the cereal mixture in this bowl, so make sure it’s a very large bowl!
Melt the Peanut Butter & Chocolate
Melt 1 stick of butter, 1/3 cup of creamy peanut butter, and 1 cup of white chocolate chips on the stove, stirring constantly over medium to low heat.
Pour the butter mixture over the Chex mixture and stir well.
Coat With Powdered Sugar
Add the powdered sugar to the bowl and stir well. Once all of the Chex and pretzels are covered, stir in the M&M chocolate candies, the rest of the white chocolate chips, and crushed candy canes.
Add mixture to a clean large serving bowl, and enjoy!
This sweet holiday snack is best enjoyed 2-3 days after you make it. If needed, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week and it will still taste fresh!
Ingredients & Variations
This Christmas mix uses simple ingredients, and you can easily make substitutions if needed.
Chex Cereal: I’ve been asked if you can use Corn Chex, Rice Chex, or another kind of Chex cereal. This is totally up to you, but just make sure it’s not one of the flavored kinds (like cinnamon).
White Chocolate Chips: I recommend you use white chocolate chips for best results, but you could certainly use a substitution such as Wilton candy melts or white almond bard if you have it on hand.
Mini Pretzels: Gluten-free pretzels could be substituted, along with regular pretzels or pretzel sticks, but you’ll need to crush those slightly (put that food chopper to good use!)
M&M’s & Candy Canes: I think these are what truly make this festive! If you want to make this recipe at any other time of the year, you might swap these out for other additions (i.e. use Valentine’s Day colored M&M’s in February, etc.). Get creative!

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular chocolate chips instead of white chocolate chips?
You can replace the white chocolate chips with regular for the part of the recipe where you melt them with the butter and peanut butter. When you get to the step where you stir the chocolate chips into the mixture at the end, I recommend you stick to white chocolate chips so you don’t get a weird color.
Can I melt the ingredients in the microwave instead of on the stove?
Yep! Just use a microwave safe bowl and heat for 20-30 second increments, stirring well after each increment. I’d recommend using the stove for faster melting time.
Can I use a ziplock bag to mix the Chex mix, instead of a bowl?
I prefer to use a large 4 quart bowl to prepare this white chocolate Chex mix recipe, because I think it’s easiest to make sure everything is stirred well. However, you can use a gallon-sized ziplock bag; just make sure you shake it well enough to coat everything!
