Do you have bored kids on your hands? Or are you trying to plan ahead, with games and idea’s to stave off the boredom monster’s at your house?

I know the experts say that boredom is healthy, well healthy or not, there are some days that saving your sanity is more important than letting your kids figure it own for themselves.

I’m a homeschooling mom of 3, I get it, that is how this game started in my house. There are various versions of this idea on the internet; I’m not sure where the original idea started, but I just love how these blocks keep my kids creative juices flowing. Best for kids aged 5-10.

Here's a creative story book craft and game to try with your kids when you need something to stave off the boredom monster at your house.

What I love most is that project offers up lots of options. From a hands on craft project to hours of imaginative play with their friends or siblings, it even helps with their creative writing time.

What I’ve included to get you started is a free PDF with story images from my book “The Little Donkey”, and a printable Rules page. I also have more pages available in my store over at https://sillygeesepublishing.com/product-category/digital-downloads/ .

What you will need:

  • PDF printable with story images and rules
  • Color Printer to print the images and rules with paper
  • 2 inch or 4 inch* wooden block or blocks
  • Mod Podge glue
  • fine grain sand paper
  • paint brush
  • Blanket or carpeted area to play (optional)
  • Laminate sheets (optional)

Directions for Making the Story Block

First, print off the pdf with the images and rules.

Second, sand the wooden block or blocks to make sure there are no splinters that could come off.

Third, cut out images and use the paint brush to paint the Mod Podge glue onto one side at a time, place the image for the side down and paint more Mod Podge glue over the top. Turn and repeat until all sides are done.

Allow to dry, this could take 24 hours depending on how humid your space is and how thickly you laid down the Mod Podge glue. Laminate the rules to keep them looking nice.

Word of warning this game can get loud, that is why I listed a blanket or carpeted area in the things your need list! My kids have been told not to play on our tile or wood floors, its just too loud. Or, even better, send them outside to play on the grass under the shade of a tree.

Alternately, you or your kids can make your own images, or words to go on the block. The only hard and fast rule is to HAVE FUN! Enjoy!

*While 2 inch blocks are easy to find, you may have to cut your own 4 inch blocks from a 4×4 post. They were nice enough at the store to cut a few for me, if you need this service make sure you go at a slow time of a day.
