Number of the Day FREE Math Worksheets for Elementary

As a former math teacher, I think one of the best things we can do for our kids early on math-wise is help them develop great number sense.
This foundation is crucial for all future math learning! Having a good number sense simply means they have a deep understanding of numbers, how they relate to each other, and how they can be manipulated.
Kids with strong number sense skills will be better equipped to solve math problems as they get older, make sense of numerical information in the “real world”, and also develop great critical thinking skills.
Even better, a solid grasp of number sense builds confidence in math (and a positive attitude!), which can absolutely have long-lasting benefits throughout all of their math classes.
So what are some ways we can nurture and build number sense in our homeschools?
One very easy way to do this is to fit in numbers practice during your homeschool morning work, using number of the day activities.
When my kids were in kindergarten, we used a hundreds chart to simply count out each day of our school year. We did a few very basic activities with the number each day, usually just writing it, tracing the number word, finding it on the calendar…things like that. When my kids reached first grade, we added on simple activities like basic base ten work, and even into second grade we still continued our number sense routine each day.

My free Number of the Day worksheets are perfect for early elementary students (about 2nd grade level), but you can absolutely modify as needed.
For example, for younger kids you could write out the number and have them trace it, and use manipulatives to teach and create number bonds instead of having them write it out or come up with it on their own.
Kids will work with each number in many different ways on these activity sheets. Here are some of the key components of these number of the day printables (which include numbers 1-10):
Number Identification: Students practice recognizing and writing the given number in various forms, including numerals, words, and tally marks.

How to Use Number of the Day Worksheets
Incorporating different number of the day worksheets into your child’s daily routine is easy and effective! Simply download and print out the worksheets and use one each day to build consistency and reinforce skills. You can work on these with your child or use them for independent work.
And, although daily use would be GREAT, you could also simply choose to do a “number of the week” and choose one number to focus on each week. In that case, consider laminating the page and using the same one every day with a dry erase marker.
