We’re 37 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.

This week’s theme is one I know I personally need to hear—walking by the Spirit. What does it really look like to walk by the Spirit in the everyday rhythms of homeschooling?

Galatians 5 reminds us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Yet in the heat of homeschooling, it’s easy to fall back on frustration or impatience instead. Discover how staying rooted in God’s Word equips us to resist those fleshly tendencies, respond with Spirit-led grace, and model Christ to our children.

What Does It Mean to Walk by the Spirit?

Galatians 5:22 reminds us of the “fruit of the Spirit”:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

Yet how often, in the hard moments of homeschooling, do we lean on our flesh instead? One frustrating math lesson, one meltdown during reading, and suddenly our reactions are filled with impatience, harshness, anger, or frustration—sometimes all within the same hour!

But Scripture gives us hope: when we walk by the Spirit, we will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). That means that even in stressful moments, we don’t have to rely on our natural tendencies. We have the Spirit living in us, empowering us to choose love, peace, patience, and self-control instead.

Staying Connected to God

So how do we walk by the Spirit? It begins with staying rooted in God’s Word. When Scripture dwells richly in our hearts, we’re better equipped to hear the Spirit’s leading.

During those tense homeschool moments, instead of reacting immediately, we can pause, breathe, and prayerfully consider how God might want us to respond. Those pauses make space for the Spirit to guide us.

Walking by the Spirit also means intentionally resisting the urge to let our flesh lead. Every time we choose kindness over harshness, patience over frustration, and gentleness over anger, we’re bearing fruit that points our children toward Christ.

Modeling Faith for Our Kids

Our kids are watching us. When they see us striving—however imperfectly—to walk by the Spirit, they learn what it looks like to live out faith in daily life. They see that Christianity isn’t just words we say, but a way of living that touches every moment, even the messy ones.

Imagine the impact this could have: children who see firsthand what it means to be Spirit-led, and who grow up knowing faith is real and active.

Our Commitment This Week

This week, let’s commit to walking by the Spirit. Let’s ask God to help us be sensitive to His leading, and to bear fruit that reflects Christ in every part of our homeschool—math lessons, story times, interruptions, and everything in between.

Galatians 5:25 reminds us:

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.”

This is our call to action: to live out what we believe, one Spirit-led step at a time.

A Prayer for This Week

Heavenly Father,

You are amazing, Lord, all knowing and all powerful. I praise you for the week you have in store for us, knowing that your ways are always higher than my ways. No matter what faces us, you are by our side in both the good challenging times of homeschooling.

You have given such a gift to us in the Holy Spirit, yet it’s so tempting for me to follow my flesh. I pray that I will align my will with yours this week and walk by the Spirit. Help me slow down and make time to be still, that I might understand how You want to direct my steps.

Bless our homeschool and fill me with the fruit of the Spirit, that I might reflect your character to others. Let my kids especially see my devotion to you in how I treat and respond to our daily circumstances.

And thank you, Father, for sending Jesus to redeem and set us free. Let me never forget the price that was paid for that freedom, but use it to serve my family with love. I pray that this entire year I consciously walk by your Spirit to bring you glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

As you move through this week, remember: you are not alone. The Holy Spirit is with you, empowering you to walk by the Spirit and bear fruit that will last.

Don’t forget—you can print out this week’s prayer and journaling pages from the prayer challenge dashboard to keep as a reminder. And if you know another homeschool mom who could use encouragement, share this with her too.
