What is Education Perfect?

Education Perfect is an online comprehensive teaching and learning platform designed by teachers for teachers and their students. It was founded in New Zealand in 2007, and is currently used by millions of students, including homeschoolers.

Their goal is to help you easily personalize learning for your kids, both challenging them and providing extra support when needed. Lessons have been carefully designed to keep kids engaged and enjoy what they are learning (definitely important – and can be hard to do!).

What Type of Lessons Does EP Offer?

Currently, Education Perfect offers material for grades 5-10, but they are working to add lower grades as well. You’ll find 35,000+ gamified, interactive lessons that are aligned with curriculum for countries around the world, across all core subject areas.

While on the platform, you can search for and assign lessons by a particular topic (for example, a math concept your child is struggling with, or a particular history period). Here are just a few subjects they offer lessons for:

  • Digital Technologies
  • English and Literature
  • Math
  • Science
  • Languages
  • Geography
  • Health and PE
  • History
  • Music
  • Humanities

Education Perfect would be considered secular, and it’s structured and aligned similarly to what would be considered “traditional” school (makes sense, since it is designed by teachers and for use by them).

Education Perfect for homeschool

However, I wouldn’t let the fact that this may not match your typical homeschool style be a stumbling block. While you may pick and choose lessons to use and how you want to use the program, Education Perfect is flexible enough to handle this and be adapted for pretty much and teaching and learning style.

Why Use Education Perfect to Homeschool?

As with any online homeschooling program, you have easy access with Education Perfect so you can do your homeschooling anywhere (great for busy families on the move!). Everything is online, so you don’t have to worry about books or worksheets (unless you want to print those off, of course).

With the wide variety of subjects offered, you can enhance or support your child’s strengths and weaknesses, no matter what level they are currently at.

Education Perfect is really easy to navigate after the initial learning curve (which they will help you with!). They also make it simple to monitor and track the work your kids are completing, which makes keeping homeschool records much easier on your end.

A Peek Inside EP

Here’s a quick look at some of the features of the Parent Dashboard that I love, and what Education Perfect looks like from the student side.

Teacher Dashboard/Parent View

Parents and students have their own separate logins with Education Perfect. Under your account is where you set up your classes, assign tasks and assessments, create competitions (more on that in a sec!), and view reports.

Here are a few screenshots that show the easy process of assigning a lesson for your kids:

You have so much flexibility to assign exactly what you want your kids to be working on and when you want them to work on it. I also love that it gives me a time estimate for how long it will take my kids to complete the lesson.

In addition to assigning lessons, you can also assign quizzes and assessments (both summative and diagnostic) from your Parent Dashboard.

Student Lessons

When you assign a lesson in Education Perfect, your student will get an alert when they log in, and easily be able to see what they need to start working on.

When students click into a lesson, they have control over the pace at which they work. The lessons are very interactive with lots of manipulative elements!

Here’s a quick video I grabbed while trying out one of the math lessons on the app (yes, Education Perfect has an app, which makes learning even more accessible and easy!).

You can see how important concepts are highlighted and visually represented, and kids have to click to continue to the next screen/part when they’re ready.

Short quizzes are built right into the lessons to make sure kids are actually understanding what is being taught…and if not, they’ll need to keep trying (no easy pass here!).

How to Use Education Perfect for Homeschooling

So how would you fit Education Perfect into your homeschool routine? Here are a few ways you might consider doing so.

Use for Extracurricular Resources

With over 40,000 lessons, experiments, and topics your kids can pick and choose from, Education Perfect is great to use as an extracurricular resource in your homeschool.

You can easily search specifically for things your kids need extra help or practice with. You can even use Education Perfect as an engaging alternative to textbook work you usually do (just to break things up every once in a while).

For example, we did some book/workbook lessons recently on proofreading from our curriculum. It was clear to me that my kids needed some extra practice and weren’t showing mastery (or much engagement with the worksheets). Education Perfect has some fantastic, interactive options for practicing proofreading that I could click and assign. Scroll through the slideshow to take a look:

Use as a Complete Curriculum

If you’d like, Education Perfect can be used as your complete homeschool curriculum for your core classes, and even a few electives. Simply select and assign exactly what you want your students to work on to complete your homeschool course requirements.

They have made this really simple for parents with the introduction of Lesson Outlines. These curriculum-aligned lesson plans are already available for some countries, and at the time of writing this review, Education Perfect is working on adding this feature for United States families. The platform is easy to use without this, however, the Lesson Outlines will make it even easier for you to plan and customize your entire school year.

If you follow a more relaxed, student-led style of homeschooling, you could simply allow your kids to log in and complete the lessons that interest them the most. It’s easy on your end to check in and see exactly what they have been working on.

For that reason, if you have some kids that do better with more structure, and some with less, Education Perfect could cater to both needs nicely.

Create Spelling Lists for Practice

I stumbled upon this feature, and think it’s great because we often need extra spelling practice. In Education Perfect, you can create and assign spelling lists for your kids, or use any of their pre-made lists.

All you need to do is enter the spelling words, and their usage in a sentence. When your kids open the assignment, they will have the word and sentence read to them and they have to type in the correct spelling.

Monthly Homeschool Competitions

This is a great feature that Education Perfect offers, and can be really effective if your kids respond well to that external motivation. Who doesn’t work well for the chance at a prize?

Basically, as kids work through each and every lesson (assigned or not!), they accumulate points. Every question answered during regular daily learning earns them one point. Then, every single homeschool child who answers at least 250 questions (250 points) during the month gets entered into a drawing for 1 of 4 $20 gift cards, and the top 3 learners each month receive a $20 gift card automatically!

These competitions are based on effort, not accuracy, so it really levels the playing field. I also noticed that when logged in under one of my kids’ accounts, it shows my other kids’ point scores at the top of the screen (since I have them all registered under one “class”), so it can be a fun competition between siblings too.

What I Love About EP

Easy Set-up & Student Dashboard

Once you have your student accounts set up, it is really easy to find and assign lessons, tasks, and assessments. The program walks you through everything step-by-step; you can’t mess it up!

The student dashboard makes it really clear to kids what lessons are due (and when). They also get notifications and alerts when you send corrections to make or assign new tasks.

Diagnostic Tests

The assessments can be used diagnostically, which makes it easy to tell where your kids are at in their learning, or where they should begin.

In fact, when you look at the assessment reports, Education Perfect will recommend specific lessons for them to do based on what they may have struggled on in an assessments. You can view these recommendations and assign them right then and there if you’d like.

Multi-Sensory, Engaging Lessons

Each lesson I viewed was full of color, videos, interactive elements and diagrams. I also noticed there is a text reader provided, so kids that learn better audibly can have the text read to them.

Lessons are short and to the point; definitely not tedious.

The math lessons had the great feature of being able to either type in an answer, or write directly on the screen (the program would convert the handwriting).

Self-Directed Learning

Education Perfect gives students control over their learning. It’s easy for them to self-pace through the work, and there are progress bars to let them (and you!) know how much has been completed.

One thing I love is that they can’t just randomly click through the pages. A certain number of seconds has to go by to try to ensure the page has at least been read, plus, quizzes are given during lessons to check for understanding.

The self-check questions are wonderful learning tools, allowing kids to make sure their answer matches the correct one, and that they understand the process. They choose how many stars to give themselves, and decide if they need to try again or if they can move on:

If they do happen to miss something, thorough explanations are given for answers (so you don’t have to worry about explaining everything).

Gamification & Instant Feedback

All Education Perfect quizzes and assessments are automatically graded, so kids get instant feedback. You don’t have to grade! And, they have frequent checks for learning within each lesson.

If they get an answer wrong on a quiz, not only will it explain why, but it will have them repeat those types of questions.

DASH is another feature offered for each lesson objective. This is a game that homeschool kids can play and compete against others all around the world, or against the computer. Many lessons have this at the end, and it’s unlocked once the lesson is completed.

Reporting Features

The reports within Education Perfect are so detailed. You can see when your kids complete tasks, view specific responses, view specific subject breakdowns…you get the picture. Pretty much any and everything you’d want to know (and then some) can be viewed in their reports section.

You’ll also get email reports sent right to you so you don’t have to go hunt them down. All reports can be exported and saved.

And for those of us who have to keep track of homeschool hours per state requirements, the time kids spend on lessons is logged automatically! So when you look at the subject breakdown, you can view exactly how much time was spent on a math lesson, science lesson, etc., in case you need that data.

Amazing Support

Education Perfect has a great FAQ section that will cover just about any question you have, plus 24/7 live chat support. Plus, every homeschooling parent can take a live webinar on how to homeschool with Education Perfect, and receive registration and planning support.

If that wasn’t enough, you can also book a platform demo to dig see firsthand how this might work for you. You can book through their link here.

There’s even a supportive Facebook community you can join for interacting with others on how to best use Education Perfect for homeschooling.
