Simple Customizable Homeschool Planner: A Plan in Place

Ever since then, I’ve been a bit of a planner snob. I’ve been through a lot of different types of homeschool planners, family planners, a digital planner, and calendars to help me keep life organized. As a busy mom, having a good system in place has been key to my sanity.
Our family uses the BJU Press Homeschool Hub for much of our homeschool organization (and I love it!), and I also use a paper planner. Digital homeschool planner apps are amazing, but I personally need to have something I can physically write on. I use pen and paper to plan out our overall school year dates, daily rhythm, and special notes and reminders.
Plus, my kids are getting to the age where they need to learn how to plan and keep track of their schoolwork and responsibilities. Especially when using a digital curriculum when many of our homeschool lessons are online, learning how to plan and finish assignments on time is a skill that can be easily lost. I have to be intentional about teaching my kids good organization habits.
For homeschool families though, typical student and teacher planners don’t often fit the bill. Different homeschool styles and routines mean we plan differently – and it can be a challenge to find the best homeschool planners for everyone in the family.

My kids and I had a great time creating our planners online for the new school year. Everyone got to choose their own cover, page options, and different ways of making their planners unique.
They have 6 different cover options to choose from, or you can upload your own picture to really make your planner customized!
If you do choose to use your own pictures, you also can add your child’s name and grade to the cover.
The inside of each cover is also laminated, and can be used as a doodle page with a dry-erase marker – we love this feature!

You can see, they didn’t leave anything out! All of these pages are so helpful in setting goals for the year and keeping track of important homeschool details all in one place.
Calendars
The calendar section consists of 14 monthly calendars, but also two year-at-a-glance calendars. I love to use the year-at-a-glance pages to plan our our “official” school days for the entire year.
Depending on how much space you need, you can customize your monthly calendars to be single page or double page. Or, you can choose not to include them if you don’t think you’ll use them! You can also choose exactly what month and year your calendars begin with, so it fits exactly what you need.
Weekly Planning Pages
The weekly schedule pages offer great customization options for your lesson planning needs. These are the pages you’ll use to create your weekly plans or plan your week in general. You can choose a one-page option per week, and you can add an optional second page if you want more space for to-do lists, daily routines, meal plans, and notes.
These weekly pages remind me of a typical planner, but the customization aspect is great:
- You choose the number of days you want per week (the “columns” of your planner). Really, these don’t even have to be days – you can name these columns whatever you want!
- Add your subjects (up to 8) so you don’t have to fill those in each week. These will be the names of your rows, and again, these don’t even have to be subjects if you want to organize your planner differently!
- Fill in your daily checklist items if you know these will be pretty consistent throughout the year.
- Choose to have a general “Notes” box, or up to three “focus boxes” for additional space to record prayers, goals, shopping lists, etc.
- You can choose to add inspirational quotes or a Bible verse (the same one will be printed on each page).
Honestly, it’s so open as to how you could customize these pages. Whatever you need to keep track of, and however you prefer to plan your week, you’ll be able to create the perfect page for you!
Record Keeping
This section comes standard, and allows you to keep track of important dates, resources, spending, and notes in general.
Add-ons
To each planner, you can add-on up to two document pockets, which are perfect for receipts or random pages you need to keep track of. You can also choose to add-on a pencil loop and stickers for your planner!

A Plan in Place Custom Planner for Students
The custom student planners offer many of the same features as the teacher planner. Student planners have the same tabbed sections (Goals & Planning, Calendars, Weekly Schedule, and Record Keeping & Notes), with great customization options for the weekly calendars.
Do My Kids Really Need Their Own Planner?
This is really up to you, but in my opinion, teaching kids how to use a planner helps them learn to set goals, plan their time wisely, and take ownership of their tasks…which are all great skills to learn!
A planner can also help your kids take the step of becoming more independent in your homeschool. You might begin using a planner to fill in your child’s school work for the week, and they have to check it each day and make sure they are accomplishing everything. They will feel more in control of their learning, and build great time management skills as well.

Student Planner Customizations
The front of the planner has an autobiography page, where your child can record some of their favorite things and facts about them – such a fun keepsake! There are also goal pages, space to record chores and responsibilities, and write down their daily schedule.

I had her subjects printed down the side, and included tasks she needed to complete each day in her daily checklist. Student Record Keeping
The record keeping section of the student planner has some great features. Kids can track extracurricular activities, track and rate books they’ve read, record field trips, and even record achievements and accomplishments. There are progress report pages, along with reflections and year-end-reviews, which contribute to making this not just a planner but a great addition to your child’s homeschool portfolio.
If you do a morning time or weekly meeting in your homeschool, a fun thing to do the first thing each week might be to set goals together, and let your kids fill in some of these spots in their planners. It would also be a great time to discuss upcoming events, due dates, and anything else your kids need to plan for, to begin creating those habits.
