We’re 23 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.
This week, I’ve been reflecting on something that’s been on my heart lately—reading the Bible with my kids.
Not just finding a good devotional or Bible-based curriculum (although those are great!), but actually opening up the Bible and helping them understand God’s Word for themselves.
If you’ve ever wondered how to build the habit of regular Bible reading in your homeschool, I hope today’s encouragement and prayer helps you take that next step.

From Religion to Relationship
I’ve met so many moms who share a similar faith journey to mine. I grew up doing “all the right things”—attending church, memorizing verses, and checking the boxes.
But if I’m honest, my Bible often sat untouched during the week, waiting until the next Sunday rolled around.
Everything changed for me in my 30s when I joined a Bible study on Proverbs. I expected practical advice, but what I received was a life-changing encounter with the living God through His Word.
I was convicted. I realized I didn’t want my kids to grow up with only a surface-level understanding of Scripture.
I wanted them to love God with their whole hearts—and that meant making the Bible a central part of our homeschool.
Why Bible Reading Matters
The Bible is how God speaks to us, and He wants us to know Him. What an incredible truth!
It’s easy to let Bible time fall through the cracks, especially when we feel pressure to “keep up” with academic subjects. But here’s the thing: math and reading are important, but they’re not eternal. God’s Word is.
If your homeschool curriculum includes Bible reading, I encourage you—don’t skip it. And if it doesn’t, or you want something more, just start with the Bible itself. You don’t have to have a fancy plan. You just need to be faithful.
A Simple Way to Start
After reading Danika Cooley’s Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible (highly recommend!), our family began a new evening routine: Bible time after dinner.
We started with the book of Proverbs, reading one chapter a day. Since most of my kids can read, we’d go around, reading a few verses each. Then we’d talk about what stood out to us.
It was simple. It was doable. And it became one of my favorite parts of the day.
You Don’t Need to Have All the Answers
Sometimes we hesitate to read the Bible with our kids because we feel like we’re not “qualified” or don’t know enough.
But we don’t have to be Bible scholars. We just have to be faithful.
God’s Word is powerful—it won’t return void. You can simply read together, ask what your kids notice or learn about God, and trust the Holy Spirit to work.
A Prayer for This Week
Heavenly Father,
I’m in awe of you, Lord, and so thankful that you have given us your Word to guide us in our lives, to lead us to salvation through Jesus. There have been times that I have not been diligent in faithfully reading your Word to my kids, but it’s your true Word that they need more than anything.
I want my kids to know You and love Your Word. Give me persistence to help them develop the habit of reading the Bible. I’m ashamed to say there are days when I feel weary or that I have more important things to do; help me to always feel the importance and urgency of feeding my children the Bread of Life.
Thank you for creating and loving my kids and for making me their mom. I pray that they know you as their Savior, that they love Your Word and desire to keep your commands. Give me the tools, the ability, and strength I need to guide them along this path.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
