Summer is a magical time for kids. There’s (usually) no school to worry about, the days are long, and the weather is perfect for playing outside.

And in a world where screens often steal the spotlight, there’s so much value in reconnecting kids with the simple joys of running, jumping, and exploring in nature’s playground!

In this blog post, I’m sharing 10 favorite outdoor summer games for kids that are a great way to ignite their imaginations, promote physical fitness, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Importance of Outdoor Play

If your kids love tech and video games as much as mine, you might know how hard it can be to get them outside some days for that fresh air.  But the value of outdoor play cannot be overstated!

Outdoor play gives kids great opportunities for physical activity, exploration, and social interaction that are essential for their overall development. It offers a multisensory experience that engages their senses and stimulates curiosity in kids about the world around them.

From running and jumping to climbing and digging, being outdoors encourages kids to use their bodies in diverse ways, promoting gross motor skill development and coordination.

Being outdoors also provides a rich context for imaginative play and creative expression.  I’ve seen my kids invent and organize the coolest games outside with their friends!

Beyond the physical and cognitive benefits, being outside in God’s creation also fosters emotional well-being in giving kids opportunities to experience joy, freedom, and a sense of connection to the natural world. As homeschool parents, it’s important to prioritize outdoor play and create opportunities for our kids to explore, discover, and thrive in the great outdoors.

Tips for Different Age Groups and Group Sizes

When organizing a fun outdoor game for kids of different ages, or different sized groups, make sure you consider developmental abilities, interests, and safety needs.

For younger children, focus on games that are simple, active, and easy to understand.  A classic outdoor game such as tag, Simon says, or a nature scavenger hunt would be perfect!

For older kids, you can introduce more complex or competitive games with strategic elements, such as capture the flag, ultimate frisbee, or a DIY obstacle course.

Regardless of age, be mindful of group dynamics and make sure all children feel included, valued, and supported as they participate.
