Thanksgiving is a great time to add a little seasonal fun to your homeschool lessons! And if you have a kindergartener or early elementary student who’s learning how to put sentences together, I’ve got a fun activity to share with you.

Learning to write complete sentences takes practice. Kids need to understand how words fit together, where capital letters and punctuation belong, and how to get their thoughts down on paper. And sometimes, having a fun theme or hands-on activity can make that practice a little more enjoyable.

That’s why I created these Thanksgiving Build a Sentence worksheets. They’re a simple way to work on sentence structure, handwriting, and even drawing skills while incorporating some Thanksgiving fun into your homeschool day.

Make Thanksgiving language arts fun with these printable Build a Sentence worksheets! Kids cut and paste words to create sentences, practice handwriting, and follow simple drawing tutorials. Includes 10 Thanksgiving-themed writing activities perfect for kindergarten, first grade, and early elementary homeschoolers.

Why Practice Building Sentences?

When kids first begin writing sentences, there’s quite a bit for them to think about! They might know how to write individual words, but putting those words together in the correct order can take some practice.

Sentence-building activities are especially helpful because they give children the opportunity to work with words before having to write everything themselves.

As they arrange words to form complete sentences, they’re practicing several important language arts skills:

  • Sentence structure: Learning how words fit together to communicate a complete thought.
  • Capitalization: Recognizing that sentences begin with a capital letter.
  • Punctuation: Learning where to place a period at the end of a sentence.
  • Handwriting: Practicing letter formation, spacing, and copying sentences neatly.
  • Reading: Reading individual words and putting them together to make sense.

And when you incorporate cutting, pasting, and drawing, you’re giving kids an opportunity to practice fine motor skills, too!

If you’re looking for a Thanksgiving writing activity for your kindergarten or early elementary student, my Thanksgiving Build a Sentence printable is a fun option!

This printable pack includes 10 Thanksgiving-themed worksheets, each featuring a five-word sentence for your child to unscramble, build, and write.

How to Use the Thanksgiving Sentence Worksheets

These worksheets are easy to incorporate into your homeschool day, and you won’t need much preparation. Just print the pages and grab some scissors, glue, and a pencil!

Thanksgiving Build A Sentence Guide

Step 1: Practice Drawing

Each worksheet includes six small illustrations that show your child how to draw a Thanksgiving-themed picture, one step at a time.

Your child can follow the drawing tutorial and recreate the picture in the large box provided. They can even color their finished drawing!

Step 2: Cut Out the Words

At the bottom of each page, you’ll find five word cards that make up a Thanksgiving sentence. The words are mixed up, so your child will need to figure out the correct order.

Have your child cut out each word card along the dotted lines.

Step 3: Build the Sentence

Next, your child will arrange the word cards to create a complete sentence.

Encourage them to read the words aloud and think about which word should come first, what order makes sense, and where the punctuation belongs.

Once they’ve arranged the sentence correctly, they can glue the words into the five boxes provided on the worksheet.

Step 4: Write the Sentence

Finally, your child will copy the completed sentence onto the handwriting lines.

Each worksheet includes a helpful reminder to check for capital letters, punctuation, finger spaces, and spelling.

This is a great opportunity to encourage your child to look back over their work and make sure they’ve included everything they need for a complete sentence.

Make Thanksgiving Writing Practice Part of Your Homeschool Day

One thing I love about seasonal printables is how easy they are to add to what you’re already doing.

You don’t necessarily need to change your entire homeschool schedule to incorporate some Thanksgiving activities!

These sentence-building worksheets could be used as a quick morning activity, independent language arts practice, or a fun addition to your Thanksgiving homeschool plans.

You could have your child complete one worksheet each day leading up to Thanksgiving, or simply pull them out whenever you want a little extra writing practice.

And if your child is still learning how to read or put sentences together independently, you can absolutely work through the activity with them! Read the words aloud together, help them think through the sentence order, and let them practice the parts they’re ready to do on their own.

For children who are a little more confident with writing, you could even extend the activity by asking them to come up with another sentence about the picture they drew.
