We’re 51 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.
“I could never homeschool… I just don’t have the patience.”
I can’t tell you how often I hear that phrase when someone learns we homeschool. And honestly? I felt the exact same way before we began. Patience wasn’t exactly my spiritual strength — and deep down, I was afraid of what my lack of it might mean for my kids, our days, and our home.
Because if I’m being truthful, in my own strength…I am impatient. I like order. I like control. I want things to run smoothly, efficiently, and preferably without chaos. And when reality doesn’t match my expectations? That impatience starts bubbling up quickly.
Maybe you know that feeling too.
You love your kids deeply, but the daily teaching… the bickering… the interruptions… the late start to the day… the math tears… the spilled cereal… it can all stretch you thin. Even on your best days, that patience can feel fragile.
But here’s the good news: God never asked us to muster up perfect patience on our own.
In fact, He knew we couldn’t.
True patience — the patient heart we desperately want as homeschool moms — doesn’t come from a personality trait or a good night’s sleep or a perfect homeschool routine.
It comes from the Holy Spirit.
Patience: A Fruit We Don’t Grow Alone
Galatians calls patience one of the fruits of the Spirit, which means it’s grown, not manufactured. It’s something the Holy Spirit develops in us as we walk with Christ. The more connected we are to Him, the more His patience flows through us.
Proverbs 14:29 says:
“Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.”
This verse always stops me in my tracks. Patience isn’t just about “keeping cool”—it’s connected to understanding and wisdom. It means stepping back and seeing beyond the frustration:
- When the lesson falls apart, what is my child actually needing?
- When the arguing erupts, what heart issue might God be revealing?
- When I feel rushed, what expectation might God be prompting me to let go of?
Patience helps us see the bigger picture—that our homeschool is about shaping character, building connection, and pointing our children to Christ… not about the perfect, smooth-running day.
On the flip side, impatience almost always brings regret.
Harsh words come quickly.
Tensions rise.
Everyone feels discouraged.
And then I find myself having another conversation later saying, “I’m sorry… Mommy was wrong. Will you forgive me?”
I’ve been there more times than I want to admit.
But even those moments are opportunities. Opportunities to humble ourselves, model repentance, and point our kids to God’s grace.
God Is Growing Patience In You
The beautiful thing about this journey is that God isn’t watching from the sidelines — He’s with us in it.
And when that familiar frustration rises in your chest, that’s your cue to pause and pray:
“Lord, help me see this moment the way You do.
Give me Your patience.”
Every time you turn to Him, He is faithful to meet you right where you are.
Every time you choose gentleness over snapping, the Holy Spirit is working.
Every time you soften your tone, slow your steps, or breathe His name, He is cultivating patience in your heart.
Homeschooling is not just growing your children — it’s growing you.
Your kids are watching you rely on the Holy Spirit. They’re seeing your humility. They’re witnessing God’s transforming work in real time. And one day, they’ll learn to do the same.
A Prayer For This Week
Heavenly Father,
This week, I pray for patience in my homeschooling. When things don’t go my way, I am tempted to be impatient and respond in frustration. Help me overcome this. I know patience comes from Your Holy Spirit—may He have a powerful presence in my life, prompting me to think before reacting and to respond with grace.
Homeschooling is such a privilege, and I’m grateful for this time with my kids. On the days when my patience feels worn thin, draw me closer to You. Remind me that perfection isn’t the goal — pointing my children to You is.
Give me wisdom, peace, and strength. Guide my thoughts and my words. Help me walk in the patience only You can provide.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
