We’re 50 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.
When the going gets tough in your homeschool, where do you turn first?
Who do you seek out when your day has unraveled?
Where do you place your confidence when you feel like you’ve fallen short?
If I’m being honest, when I ask myself these questions, I know what my answer should be: God.
But if I look at my everyday patterns…the truth is, I often turn to my husband first. Or I scroll through advice from homeschool “experts.” Or I bury my frustrations in a bowl of chocolate ice cream.
Now, seeking counsel isn’t wrong. Leaning on our husbands, fellow moms, or helpful resources can be a blessing. And yes…sometimes ice cream really does help a little.
But the problem comes when these things become our first instinct instead of our second, and God gets pushed down the list of places we go for help.
Because here’s the truth:
We have a Helper who knows us better than we know ourselves.
He sees every burden we’re carrying.
He knows every discouraging moment, every worry, every decision weighing on our minds.
And He invites us—again and again—to look to Him first.
The Source of Our True Help
Psalm 121:1–2 gives us a powerful reminder:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
The psalmist doesn’t ask the question because he doesn’t know the answer—he asks it to reorient his heart. To redirect his gaze. To declare, “I know exactly where my help comes from… and it’s not from people, circumstances, or myself.”
As homeschool moms, the weight on our shoulders can feel enormous.
We’re juggling academics, meal prep, character training, emotional needs, sibling squabbles, appointments, and all the unexpected little things that pop up in the middle of it all.
It’s easy to forget where our real help comes from in the middle of all that noise.
But God calls us to turn our eyes upward—to the One who created the mountains, the universe, and everything in it.
The One who is infinitely powerful and deeply personal.
The One who is never overwhelmed, never confused, and never caught off guard.
When we turn to Him first, everything else finds its proper place.
What Happens When We Seek God First?
Turning to God first doesn’t mean ignoring the support He’s placed in our lives.
It simply means anchoring our hearts in Him before we run anywhere else.
When we lift our eyes to the Lord:
- Our perspective shifts
- Our anxiety softens
- Our decisions become clearer
- Our hearts slow down
- Our homes become more peaceful
And often, God still uses the people around us—our husbands, our friends, a timely podcast, or even a bowl of ice cream—to comfort us.
But our foundation stays exactly where it belongs: in Him.
This week, let’s intentionally practice seeking God first.
Before venting.
Before reacting.
Before turning to Google, Instagram, or even a trusted friend.
Let’s pause…
Lift our eyes…
And remember where our help truly comes from.
A Prayer for This Week
Heavenly Father,
I am so thankful that my help comes from You and not from this world. Homeschooling can feel overwhelming, but You promise to equip me for every situation. Too many times I put my trust in curriculum, strategies, or experts without first coming to You.
This week, when challenges arise, I will choose to lift my eyes to You.
Guide me as I teach, parent, disciple, and love my children. Give me wisdom in every circumstance, and let my actions reflect my trust in Your provision.
Thank You for Your Word and the way it transforms me daily. Help me glorify You in our homeschool this week, in everything I say and do.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
We have prayed for our homeschools faithfully for almost an entire year—what a gift!
Let’s keep going this week by intentionally turning to our greatest Helper first, trusting Him fully, and walking in confidence because He is the One who strengthens and sustains us.
