Managing a household and homeschooling four kids is no small feat—and for me, having a solid chore system in place has been a game changer!
Over the years, I’ve tried a few different approaches to chores, and what we’re doing now has been one of the most effective (and sanity-saving!) systems I’ve used.
If you’ve read any of my previous posts about chore charts, this post is kind of an update. I’ve made a few changes to our system as my kids have gotten older, and I wanted to share what that looks like now.
Plus, by popular request, I’ve also created a customizable Editable Chore Chart Template so you can use this system in your own home too!

Why We Started Chore Charts in the First Place
When I first started homeschooling, I had a kindergartener, toddler twins, and shortly after, a baby on the way. Back then, I wasn’t really thinking much about chores—just surviving the day!
But as I transitioned into staying home full-time and our homeschool routine, I quickly realized that I needed a plan for teaching my kids how to be responsible and help take care of our home (in age-appropriate ways!).
I remember visiting a friend from my Bible Study Fellowship group and noticing how polite and helpful her kids were. We got into a discussion about how she taught her kids to do chores and help out, and she reminded me that even little ones are capable of helping—and often want to help. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it’s so important to start building those habits early.
So, from wiping cabinet doors to folding towels and feeding pets, we slowly started incorporating small, age-appropriate tasks into our daily rhythm.
Our Chore Chart Journey
Over time, we’ve used a few different systems. One of my favorites when the kids were younger was the Character Badges chart, which included magnetic task cards and earned badges. That worked well for a season!
Later, I switched to a zone cleaning system—something that’s still at the heart of what we do today. I rotate my kids through each of our household zones with assigned tasks based on what needs to be done in that space. It’s simple, and it works.
Now that my kids are older, we’ve revamped the charts again. They’re still using zones, but the chores are a bit more grown-up and focused on pitching in and doing their part well. It’s less about learning how to clean and more about following through with responsibility and contribution.
How It Works
Each of my kids has a laminated chore chart hanging on the whiteboard in our kitchen. Once they’ve completed their chores each day, they mark them off with a dry erase marker. It’s a simple visual system for both them and me!
We also use Homeschool Planet to set up daily reminders, and in our home, chores (and schoolwork) must be finished before any screen time or electronics. That’s been a big motivator!
And yes—even my youngest (age 6) is excited to have his own chart and chores. We’re adding to his chart gradually as he learns more and becomes more capable. It’s truly something that grows with your family.
