Online Math Curriculum for a Homeschooling Win: 7 Practical Benefits

I’m standing at the whiteboard in our kitchen, teaching math, and about to pull my hair out.
I’ve got a baby fussing at me from his bouncy seat, two daughters that need individual attention with their 1st grade work, and a son who would much rather build a robot with his math cubes than learn subtraction.
All of my kids needed something different. At the same time.
And what we were doing just wasn’t working.
Most other subjects were much easier for me to teach with all of my kids together, learning the same ideas, but just exploring them at different levels. Math is a whole different ball game.
For my sanity, I told myself: it wouldn’t always be this challenging…right?

We found our game changer
Over the next few weeks, I had three different friends tell me about a different option they were loving: online math curriculum.
I don’t know why I hadn’t considered it before. Maybe I’d been a little overwhelmed and unsure of where to start with an online curriculum. Maybe I didn’t think my kids could handle it.
I think maybe I didn’t want to give up some of the control I had in teaching everything to my kids myself.
But in the end, that control was wearing me down.
And once I admitted to myself that it was ok to sidestep and try something new, I realized that an online math curriculum was a big homeschooling win for us.
Maybe it could be yours, too.
Saving your sanity
Math. The word itself might bring back a flood of emotions from your own school experiences: you either love it, dislike it, or would rather walk over a patch of hot coals than have to deal with teaching Geometry proofs.
Math can be one of the hardest subjects for some kids to grasp. And one of the subjects I see homeschool parents worrying about the most.

Even if you love math (like me), teaching it in a homeschool with multiple kids vying for your attention poses many challenges.
And if you hate it, well…it can be difficult not to pass that mindset to your kids.
The good news is that there are many reasons using an online math curriculum can help you foster a positive attitude towards math in your kids.
And you don’t even have to think about walking over those hot coals.
Why you should consider an online math program
Research shows that early success in math is a good indicator of achievement in subjects across the board (more so than early reading skills!).
A great online math curriculum can help you ensure your kids are learning the fundamental skills they need and having success at each step along the way.
Here are 7 more reasons that will make you wonder why you didn’t try an online math curriculum sooner:
Reason #1: Individualized pacing
Kids learn math in different ways, at different rates. I have twins, which you would think makes my job easier because I can teach them the same curriculum at the same time, right?
Well, even they are often in different places in their curriculum. Because they are different people, with different strengths, and different ways of looking at things.
That’s the beauty of homeschooling, right? We can allow our kids to work at their own level, not having to follow alongside or keep up with anyone else. An online math curriculum can make this so much easier on you, allowing your kids to all work at their own pace as needed.
CTC Math is a great example of an online math curriculum that allows students to work according to their current ability level. They offer short, pre-recorded lessons students can rewind as much as needed (meaning – you don’t have to repeat yourself 10 times!), or progress more quickly if they are able to.
They also have a great new feature that helps kids master concepts and gain confidence in their ability to do math: Adaptive Questions. These are interactive questions based on what your kids need, using an algorithm to vary the degree of difficulty as they work.

Bottom line: online math curriculum is easily customizable. Because no two kids are alike – not even your own – and your curriculum should support your kids’ individual learning needs.
Reason #2: Multisensory learning
Using an online math curriculum is a great way to encompass multiple senses to engage all learners, help them master necessary skills, and improve overall mathematical thinking.
This is because students are engaging many senses as they learn: they are hearing the instructor teach, visualizing the problem on the screen and often using manipulatives (either on the computer or physical manipulatives).
Multisensory learning not only helps all types of learners, but enhances learning and memory in general. Which is a big positive when trying to help your kids learn math!

Reason #3: Gamification
In the past, when my kids struggled learning a math concept, I would search for an “app” that would turn it into a game for them (you know – that trick where they are having so much fun they don’t even realize they’re learning).
Many online curriculums have some aspect of “gamification” that kids love, and helps them engage in the learning process.
Being able to accumulate points, unlock levels, or even just solve problems using characters in a game can be really motivating for some kids, and interactive elements can make mundane math concepts come to life.
For example, when my son needed some extra practice on his times tables, we headed to CTC Math for their Speed Skills game, and also their Times Tables game (definitely try it out during your free trial!).

The ability for students to earn automatic feedback through online curriculum is another form of “gamification” that enhances learning.
(I’ve actually run into the “problem” of my kids not wanting to stop because they want to improve their score. I’ll take it!)
When kids are having fun, that means they are engaged, and learning will more easily take place. I don’t always know how to make math fun, so I’m thankful for techie tools that do.
Reason #4: YOU don’t have to teach math!
Guess what? You don’t have to do it all! To give your kids a great math education doesn’t mean that you have to be a modern day Euclid, Pythagoras or Archimedes.
You are allowed to delegate. Especially subjects that might not be your strongest.
And when you use a credible online math curriculum, your kids are getting highly qualified teachers that have put in the time to make sure your kids successfully learn the material.
You don’t have to worry about not knowing how to explain something – online curricula like CTC Math often have solutions fully worked-out so students can analyze and learn from their mistakes.
No more prepping math lessons, no more butting heads with your kids over their math work, and no more wondering why all of those letters are showing up in Algebra class.
Reason #5: Learn anywhere
As a busy homeschooling family, we are often out and about. I love the ease of being able to do our lessons anywhere we have internet-access; that means that while my daughter is doing her piano lesson, my son can be finishing up his math assignment (and I didn’t even have to drag a textbook along!).
You can enjoy the freedom of easily completing schoolwork on-the-go with an online math curriculum.
Reason #6: Easy reporting
At first, I worried that since I wasn’t doing the actual teaching, that it would be hard to keep track of what my kids were leaning and how they were progressing.
But a good online math curriculum will take this worry away by sending you frequent reports and updates, making it as easy as possible for you.
For example, CTC Math will send a weekly report right to your email. Or, if you prefer, you can log in and easily see exactly what your kids worked on that day.
Reason #7: Cost effective
Finally, if you’re watching your homeschooling budget, online curriculum can be super affordable. There are a variety of options out there to fit what your family might need.
Some companies offer a free trial so you can determine if the program will work for you; if not, definitely look for one with a money-back guarantee.
You’ll also save money because you don’t have to buy a textbook or a bunch of workbooks…and you might not even have to buy any manipulatives (unless your kids learn better with them!) because they can often be represented online instead.
So where to begin?
Teaching math in your homeschool doesn’t have to be hard, frustrating, or scary – and an online math curriculum can definitely be part of the solution to math woes.
But sometimes it takes time (and a little trial and error) to find one that works best for your family. Not all are created equal, and it’s ok if the first one you try isn’t a great fit.
Finding the best online math curriculum for your family
CTC Math is an online math curriculum that thousands of homeschool families swear by. It would be a great place to start, especially with their free trial, money-back guarantee, and family membership options. Homeschool families can even get a half-priced discount.
I also love the online homeschool curriculum directory over at Techie Homeschool Mom. This is “the place” to search for any online homeschool curriculum (math or otherwise!) you might need.
If you’re hitting a bump in the road with teaching your kids math, finding the right online curriculum could be just what you need. And before you know it, you’ll be enjoying each of these benefits in your own homeschool!
