We’re 39 weeks into our series of praying for our homeschools – I’m so thankful you are joining me! You can learn more about the series here. We’ll pray about a new area of our homeschool journey each week and dig into God’s Word with daily devotional reflections.

Homeschooling can often feel like a daily grind—checking off lessons, managing the household, and juggling all the responsibilities.

But in the middle of it all, God calls us to something greater: to shine His light.

Every moment, even the small and ordinary ones, can become opportunities for His light to shine through us.

Matthew 5:14–16 reminds us that we are the light of the world, called to reflect the love of Christ in all we do. Like stained glass or the moon reflecting the sun, our lives can shine God’s light in unique ways. Even the ordinary moments of homeschooling—teaching lessons, serving our families, or showing patience—can become opportunities for His light to shine through us.

A Picture of Light

Recently, my BSF leader shared an analogy that stuck with me. She compared the church—the body of believers—to a stained glass window. Each of us is like one unique piece of glass, and when the light of Christ shines through, the whole window comes alive with color and beauty.

What a picture of how God’s light can shine through each of us in different, unique ways! In our homeschools, this means that our patience, kindness, love, and even the way we handle challenges can reflect Christ to our children and those around us.

Remembering Whose Light We Shine

Sometimes we forget that the light of Christ is within us. It’s not a light we generate on our own—it’s His light in us. And when we’re prayerful and intentional, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, His light naturally reflects through us.

Matthew 5:14–16 reminds us:

“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.”

We shine not for our own recognition, but so others may see God’s glory.

An Unexpected Reminder

This truth hit home again for me in an unexpected way. While my husband was away on a work trip, he mentioned that a lunar eclipse was happening. We ran to the window, and sure enough, the moon was partially shadowed.

It reminded me of how the moon reflects the light of the sun, just as we are called to reflect the light of Christ. But during an eclipse, the earth gets in the way, blocking the moon’s reflection. Isn’t that just like us? When we keep our eyes on Jesus, we shine brightly. But when we let the world get in the way, our light is dimmed.

A Prayer for This Week

Heavenly Father,

I praise you for the gift of homeschooling, and the opportunity to be a light to my family and others around me. Let me be aware of the Holy Spirit’s prompting this week, that I may encourage my kids, show kindness and patience, and let them see You through me.

I know our lights are not meant to be hidden. Show me where you want to use me each day; show me how you want us to use our time as a homeschool family to share the gospel and bring hope to a world lost in darkness. Use our strengths, talents, gifts, and our time, not for our own recognition, but for yours.

And thank you for sending Jesus, our only light and salvation, who willingly made the ultimate sacrifice for us. May we be bold in letting our lights shine, that others may see our good works, be pointed to you, and give you glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen

Walking It Out

As you move through this week, remember that God can use even the smallest moments—reading lessons, snack breaks, or conversations—to shine His light through you. You are making a difference, not only in your children’s education but also in their faith.

Let’s commit to shining brightly for His glory.
