Good morning, friends. I'm Sarah from Blessed Home School. It's Friday morning. I just finished my workout
0:05
And today I'm going to show you two things. I'm going to show you my favorite quick breakfast
0:09
recipe that I make for the kids during the week. And I'm also going to take you through a lesson
0:14
or two from our learning language arts through literature curriculum for my sixth grader
0:30
Okay, so this morning, my workout was RPM or a spin class
0:33
It's from the less mills company. And so I use my spin bike in the basement
0:38
This is probably one of my favorite purchases. I found it for, it was less than $100 on Facebook Marketplace
0:46
and I've had it for over five years, maybe six years now
0:51
So it's really easy to just hop on in the morning. I put this on the top so I can either put my iPad here and stream the classes
1:00
or we have a projector that I will put down and I will cast the classes to the projector from there
1:07
And it came with regular pedals, but I did switch them out for clips
1:14
Put a water bottle holder on there. Nice fancy attachment there, but it works
1:22
And so that's what we did this morning. They do have options for 30-minute classes or 45-minute classes, and this morning was a 45-minute class
1:30
And I also wanted to show you yesterday I got a question from somebody who had seen my pictures on the wall from my other video and asked what they were
1:38
So I just wanted to show you these are just some Dr. Seuss quotes on some prints
1:42
I purchased them off of someone on Etsy probably over 10 years ago
1:48
And I had just checked and the shop isn't there anymore. But these have migrated around everywhere
1:54
We've moved our playroom. I've just put them up on the wall. I just think they're really cute
1:58
All right, so it's time to head upstairs and quick shower and we'll get to cooking breakfast
2:04
All right, so it's almost 8.30. My kids are working on some of their independent work
2:08
I'm going to get some banana chocolate chip muffins in the oven while they are working and then
2:14
they'll have a little bit of breakfast afterwards and we'll continue on with their day. I am going to also do my devotion and eat breakfast while these are in the oven
2:22
This is my favorite go-to recipe. We always end up with two lonely bananas that start to go back
2:28
and they're perfect for this and I love making it because it's super quick and I can do it all in one bowl
2:36
So it's really become an easy go-to recipe that I can make anytime and I enjoy them too. I usually will eat these for a snack during the day, but let me show you how to make them
2:48
So I actually put this recipe up on my blog and you're gonna want to go there and print it out. So I will drop the link in the description below, but all you need is sugar. You need about
2:58
two-thirds cup of sugar. You need one and a half cups of flour, some baking powder about a
3:05
teaspoon and a half, one egg, some butter, about a quarter teaspoon of salt, about a quarter
3:14
cup of milk, a little under a cup of chocolate chips, and two ripe bananas. So first thing
3:20
I'm going to do is I'm going to put the butter in this bowl and I'm going to microwave it and melt it and then I'll add the rest of the ingredients to it
3:28
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, oh, oh, oh
3:36
Boom, boom, boom. Boom, boom. Boom, boom. Boom, boom, boom. Bing, bang, bang
3:44
You shade your hips. Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang, bang
3:50
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang. You shade your hips
4:28
BING-BING-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Bing, bing-Bing, bing-d-d-shaid-Bing
4:39
Shade your hips. There you go oh oh oh done in just about half an hour
5:04
Make sure you head to the link on my blog and grab that recipe so you can print it out
5:08
and try it for yourself. Okay, so this year with my sixth grade son, for language arts, we are using learning language
5:24
arts through literature, the Tan Book. This is a completely different curriculum than we've used
5:29
in the past. The past couple of years, we've used BJU Press, which I really liked, but it was
5:35
just time for something different for many reasons. And that's the beauty of homeschooling, right
5:39
We have the option to switch things up whenever our kids need something different and when we
5:43
need something different. So I found this curriculum from a recommendation from a friend
5:47
was researching it, looking through it, looked great. I love the integrated approach
5:51
and so we decided to try it out this year. So this curriculum really takes an integrated approach
6:01
The publishers believe that by using fine literature and good models of writing, working
6:06
with those good models of writing, and that kids can really learn language arts is the best
6:09
Each week your kids are going to take a passage of literature and they're going to use that
6:14
passage to work on their grammar, their spelling, their reading, their writing, their vocabulary
6:20
their handwriting, their thinking skills. is going to be taught and learned from a good literature passage that they are working on
6:29
This was a really different concept for me. So I at first had a hard time picturing what this is actually going to look like
6:36
So I think that it will be helpful to kind of show you what the lessons are
6:40
There are 36 weekly lessons. And there are four novel studies throughout the year
6:46
You kind of can read those as your schedule allows. They aren't built into a specific time in the curriculum
6:52
They recommend them at specific times, but they give you a lot of flexibility as to when you want to do them
6:56
We just started our third week with this curriculum. So let's go ahead and jump in, and I'll show you what we've been working on this week, what the lessons have been like and exactly what we're doing
7:09
Okay, so this is my teacher's manual for the Tan Book, Learning Language Arts, Through Literature
7:14
And this week, we were starting on lesson three. So it's broken down by day
7:18
So it tells me what I need to do for day one, day two, and so on
7:23
All right, at the very beginning of the lesson, it gives you the passage that you're going to be
7:26
reading and working on for the week. So this week we're working on a passage from Bambi
7:32
So let's take a look at what this week's lessons look like. So you can see how everything is integrated
7:36
And I'll show you my son's book as well. So you can see what the student guide looks like
7:41
So for day one, it's talking about how we use words to paint a picture
7:47
So I read this out loud and all my son had to do was listen and listen for the different words that kind of paint that picture in there
7:56
Then we had to do dictation. So he has in his student book right here, this is the passage
8:03
So it follows pretty similarly to the teacher's guide. It gives him space to write out his dictation
8:09
So what I did is I read this out loud. I went sentence by sentence
8:13
And then he had to write out what he heard. me saying. And then after we did that, we went through and we had to proofread it for any
8:24
mistakes. So this is something that I know he needs to work on. And so we've been going through and
8:30
working on proofreading with spelling, capital letters, and things like that. Afterwards
8:35
it says to make a spelling list from any misspelled words or use the following suggested
8:42
list. So I really like this. We're building our spelling list off of words that
8:47
that my kids are struggling with. Okay, so it's not just random lists
8:52
They're words that they're using throughout the week in the passage and also words that they don't know
8:57
So there were a couple of words when he wrote him down that he didn't know how to spell
9:03
So I have a notebook for them and each of my kids have their own language arts notebook
9:09
So each week we will make a list of the spelling words we're gonna work on
9:14
So I had to open this up and we just listed out which words he misspelled. And then we also added the suggested ones. If they if they don't misspell
9:25
those or they don't use them, we add those in so they can practice them. So then this is the list that we
9:30
kind of practice on throughout the week and add to it. So as we do our other work, if there are other
9:35
words that I notice he's struggling with, we add him to his spelling list. So then we moved on and started
9:41
talking about prefixes. So it explains two different, well in this one, let's see, we had one
9:47
prefix and it talked about what the prefix meant. It had us find the word in the literature passage
9:54
and underline it So he going back up to the literature passage and underlining the words that have that prefix And then add the prefix to your list of prefixes You started in lesson one So back in
10:09
lesson one, we began a chart with prefixes. So we had the prefix, the meaning, and some word examples
10:18
And this is, we're going to be adding to this throughout the year. So that's what that part meant. So he added it
10:24
right in there. Then we started talking about suffixes. And also, I should say, on the side here
10:32
it does give you the answers. So it tells me what word he should have underlined in the passage
10:37
and then other examples for his chart. Okay. So moving on to part D, we're talking about suffixes
10:47
It tells what the suffix is. While prefixes give you an understanding of the meaning of a word
10:52
suffixes can often help in determining the part of speech of a word, whether it's a verb, adjective, etc
10:58
Notice all the words from your suggested spelling list and in I-N-G or E-D. So it goes back to the spelling list
11:05
talks about suffixes in terms of those. And so it goes on a little bit. All right, up here
11:12
let's see, tells all the words in your spelling list are used as verbs in the literature passage
11:17
Okay. So then we are doing a suffix chart, just like with
11:22
with the prefix chart. So tells us to locate the commonly used suffixes
11:26
at the back of the book. So there is a chart in the back of his student manual
11:30
that goes through all of the different prefixes and suffixes. So it has him flipped to there
11:41
And referring to that list, he has to fill in the chart in his book
11:45
with the suffix. All right, so we did the E-D and the I-N-G
11:51
And that was it. for day one of this week. So short and sweet. We did, you know, reading a little bit of the new
12:00
passage. We did spelling. We talked about some grammar in terms of what we are reading. And also as
12:09
you know, we're doing the passage, I'm having him work on his handwriting. That's something we've
12:14
been working on too. So very integrated. So then let's go on to day two. All right. Here we were
12:22
talking about figurative language. So we talked about what a simile was
12:28
It asked him to finish some expressions with words that create similes
12:33
and then create a couple of his own. So in the student book
12:39
all right, you'll see again, it gives them space to do that. Okay, so fills it out and creates his own
12:47
Then after that, this was a very short day too, which again, very different from us
12:51
because before we were doing reading. We had a separate curriculum for English, for spelling, handwriting
13:00
It was all separate, and it took a long time, even though it was great
13:04
So this, you know, we're only three weeks in, but it's more engaging for my kids
13:10
And I feel like we're getting a lot done and talking about things in a way where it's making sense because it's integrated
13:16
And we're just really enjoying it. And it fits with our schedule very well too because it is a lot more condensed and not taking up as much time
13:25
So second day, after we talked about similes, we had to review the spelling words
13:31
And then he had this optional enrichment. I thought it was kind of silly. But he had to draw a face for each sentence
13:37
So that was the enrichment for the day. As far as reviewing the spelling words, I just had him study the list
13:44
Sometimes we will use a spelling app or something where I can plug the words
13:48
in and they can practice them there. But I just had him study his words and then I gave him an oral
13:54
spelling test to see how he did. And then I put stars by ones that he missed and then we practiced
14:02
those for a little bit more. Okay, so moving on for day three. We were looking at the spelling
14:10
list and talking about syllables. And let's see, I think it had him, yeah, it had him divide his
14:18
words into syllables. So that was actually in his book. It gave him a place to do that. So right here
14:25
he took some of his spelling words and we worked on dividing those into syllables. He did it on his
14:30
own and then I went through afterwards and checked it for him. And then we moved on to personification
14:38
So talking about what personification is, reading some examples. And he had to answer a question about
14:46
that and then he had to create sentences using personification for each of the following phrases
14:52
So it gave him some phrases and he had to write an entire sentence using that phrase Okay it gives me some possible answers as the teacher over here but I had him write them down
15:04
Again, encouraging him to use good handwriting and then we went through and checked it over
15:12
afterwards. And then at the end of that day, we again reviewed spelling words
15:18
Usually at the end of each week, they have a spelling test, so it's good to review those a little bit
15:22
each day. Okay, on day four, then we moved into talking about adjectives. This one was a little bit more
15:29
of a struggle, but we worked through it. We went back to the literature passage, and we had to
15:37
locate all the adjectives that were in the literature passage and circle them. Okay, so we went back
15:44
to the text, and he had to circle all of the adjectives. Okay, and then it asked him to re-reliven
15:52
read the passage without the adjectives and notice how much more difficult it was to picture
16:00
the scene without those words. Right. And then the next part, this is really fun. We had to find
16:05
a picture in a book or magazine of mountains, trees, clouds, animals, or anything. And he had to
16:12
write a few sentences to describe it using figurative language. So my son chose a picture. It was
16:17
some rocks covered with snow and there were trees there. And he really had a thing. And he really had a
16:22
think and stretch himself, I encouraged him to make sure he used personification, that he used
16:29
simile, and that he was painting a good word picture of the scene. So this was one of the reasons
16:37
that, you know, I really liked this curriculum and why this change was needed, because this was
16:44
something, the writing part was something that we needed to work on a little bit more. And it was
16:49
really great to be able to see his thought process, to sit down and work with him on this
16:57
help him to see how he could work those words, those words that would paint that picture
17:03
of the scene into his writing. So we worked through that for a little bit and again, talking
17:10
about spelling, talking about grammar as we went along until we finished that up. Then afterwards
17:17
words, we did a spelling pre-test. So I gave him his words and it reminded him to sound out the
17:24
syllables as he wrote them. And the next day, which will be today, we haven't done it yet
17:30
but he'll have a test over those spelling words. Okay. So today, again, it's Friday. So we're on
17:36
day five. We haven't done this lesson yet. This will be what we have on the schedule for today
17:41
But we'll be writing the literature passage from dictation one more time. Then this says choose a poem
17:47
that offers a good descriptive image and read it to your teacher. After you finish reading the poem
17:52
point out any examples where the author used, a simile or personification. So we will look for a poem
17:59
and do that. Then finally, it asks us, how does literature passage make you feel? Does it sound like a
18:09
place you'd want to be? rewrite it and change the mood by describing the scene differently. Spelling test
18:15
and then on the last day they have review activities. So if we come over here, these are optional
18:23
but anything you feel like your student needs to review, you can choose problems to review
18:29
So, for example, we've got syllables, prefixes, suffixes, similes, persomification, and adjectives
18:36
If we have time, I do like to try to go through all of those just to refresh everything
18:41
But that is a full week of learning language arts, through literature from the Tan Book. So I hope that gives you an idea of how everything is really
18:52
integrated. I had a hard time picturing kind of what it would look like before we actually
18:58
jumped in because it was so different to us. But we're really enjoying this curriculum so far
19:03
And you might too. All right. So I hope that gives you a good idea of what this curriculum is like
19:08
And I hope you try out this recipe at home too and enjoy some banana chocolate chip muffins with your kids
