Good morning everyone. Welcome back to my channel for another day in the life video
0:04
Today is field trip day. We are going on a homeschool field trip. So I'm really excited about our
0:09
field trip today. We live about an hour and a half away from Hannibal, Missouri. And today there's
0:16
a World War II ship that is docking on the riverfront there, and we're going to go tour it
0:20
This ship is the LST 325. It's a landing ship tank, and this ship participated in the D-Day invasion in
0:28
1944. My kids and I have studied World War II a little bit in our homeschool, but we also did watch a
0:33
short documentary about D-Day last night to refresh our memories and prepare a little bit for the
0:38
field trip today. My husband loves World War II history, but unfortunately he can't come with us
0:43
today because he has to work. So it's just me and the kids and some friends from our homeschool co-op
0:49
So I'm going to take you with me as we tour the ship and learn a bit more about its history
0:53
These ships were the largest ships back then that were designed to carry tanks
0:58
troops and supplies to a hostile beach and then retreat off the shore. They could carry a lot of
1:04
trucks, ammunition, soldiers, et cetera. And Churchill called these the ships that won the war due to
1:11
their part in the D-Day invasion. Since we'll be in Hannibal, our first stop is actually going to be visiting the Mark Twain home
1:28
and museum. My kids actually haven't read anything from Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens before, but I remember
1:33
loving his books when we were younger. We watched a little documentary about him the other day as well
1:38
and I found an abridged version of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on Hoopla that we're going to listen to on our drive there
1:45
I also found some scavenger hunts online for the home and museum. I'm not sure if we'll have time
1:51
to do them, but I'm bringing them just in case we have extra time to explore, or I need something to
1:57
keep my kids engaged. And then finally I've got the snack bag ready to go, lots of just extra snacks
2:05
and food in here, and coffee. Can't ever forget that. But kids are getting packed up. We're
2:13
going to head out in the car and hit the room. Got it
4:08
All right. So we just walked through. Huck Finn's house. Luke, what was his name
4:15
What was the person's name? That was Huck Finn. No, town Blankenship
4:21
Yeah, so that was neat to learn a little bit about him and see the house, a very small house
4:26
Next up is Mark Twain's Boyhood home. So we're going to head over there and see what we can learn there
5:10
So we're a little way to the tour
5:25
So we're a little ways through the tour
5:38
We're stopping at the gift stuff. door before we head on to the other houses
5:44
The tour is self-guided. So we are just following the signs and making our way through at our own leisure
5:52
I like to see the ball back. Pull back cars. How do you like
6:40
Do you do your schoolwork? Oh, God, have a big. I have a big
6:46
Oh, look at the punishment that they had. You broke a school rule
6:57
One hundred. It didn't come with a chair, though. Oh, look at that on the wall right there, guys
7:04
The switch or the cane? Wow. Wow. Long before they were video games what the kids would do
7:27
Next we're going to visit the law office and then the rest store
7:42
All right. break and now we are waiting with our group to get on the ship and take it home. We didn't have ice cream yet. We'll maybe get that later, okay
9:42
All right, so we just finished up our field trip. We were about to head home. We toured the Mark Twain homes. We went on the ship. We toured the Mark Twain homes. We went on the ship. We did not make it to the Mark Twain Museum, which I was kind of
10:12
kind of hoping to. It looks really neat, but we are just done for the day. It's about three o'clock
10:18
in the afternoon, so it's about time to start heading home. Kids, are you ready to go home
10:23
Yeah. What did you enjoy? What was your favorite part of the trip today
10:27
The boat. You like the boat? I like the ice cream. And the ice cream
10:35
No, my mom. I like the boat in an ice cream. They did have a really cute general store that we stopped at for lunch and they did have free ice cream there
10:48
So that was a highlight. You guys like learning the history of the boat Yeah Yep And we enjoyed it on the way down here listening to the adventures of Tom Sawyer So it was neat to kind of have that fresh on our minds and then tour the location So we are about to
11:03
head home. And yeah, everyone buckled. You guys ready? Okay, let's go. All right. So we made
11:11
it back home from our field trip. We hit a little traffic on the way back, but we made it home
11:15
nonetheless. It was a long day. We left at about 8 a.m. this morning and we got back around
11:21
5 p.m. We did not have any other schoolwork plan for today. It just would not have gotten done
11:28
Knowing that we were going to have this field trip coming up this week, we kind of rearranged our schedule a little bit. I tried to do a few more things on the other days to make up for
11:37
this day, keeping it free to do our field trip. We are going to take some time tomorrow on
11:45
Saturday just to wrap up a little bit of math and things like that. But otherwise
11:51
The field trip was our schooling for the day. It was a lot of fun. The kids did great
11:55
We really enjoyed listening to the audiobook of the adventures of Tom Sawyer
12:02
We had never listened to it before. So it was really cool to listen to that and then have the opportunity to go and tour the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens
12:11
and learn about just the history behind there, see a lot of different artifacts in the home
12:17
And it's just Hannibal is a really neat little town. So we had a great time visiting
12:22
It was really neat to see the reconstruction of the home of his friend who Huck Finn was modeled after
12:30
And also to visit the Becky Thatcher House, which was actually his friend, Laura Hawkins, who he modeled Becky Thatcher after
12:40
The ship tour was a lot of fun. It was around 1 o'clock that we toured the ship
12:44
So the kids were already starting to get a little tired and it was kind of hot outside
12:48
The ship was pretty warm in a lot of. parts, but it was neat to just be able to see it, to be on it and have that experience
12:56
So I feel really fortunate we were able to take that trip today. So we did plan this
13:01
trip, this field trip, with a local co-op group. So we did get some special group
13:05
admission rates. Typically, it's about $14 for adults to tour the Mark Twain home. Children
13:13
five and under are free. Otherwise, it is about $6, I think, for kids. With the group rate, I think
13:20
five dollars per person, I'd have to look, but we didn't get a special group rate. But if you are
13:25
anywhere nearby, it's a great, great little town to visit, a great opportunity for a field trip
13:30
so I would highly recommend it. I do really wish we would have had a chance to visit the museum
13:35
That looked really interesting, but maybe the next time we'll be able to do it. And I did end up
13:40
using the scavenger hunt worksheets. My older son, my sixth grader, actually used it. And I do
13:46
highly recommend that if you have older kids. There was a lot of information to
13:50
read when we were in the interpretative center. So having that scavenger hunt really helped us to focus
13:55
in on what to read and what we wanted to learn about. Well, thank you so much for watching and coming
