Confession time. My kids are terrible at geography. But you know what? That's okay. We've been
0:08
killing it in U.S. history the past couple of years. But this year, we are cracking down on geography
0:13
And guys, I don't think I'd actually realize how little we'd focused on geography until my kids
0:18
had to take a pre-test in exploring countries and cultures the other day. It's bad
0:26
I say that jokingly because we are not behind. It's okay. that my kids don't know where 200 different countries are on the map right now because we don't
0:35
have to know all the things right away. We can learn them as we go. And this is our year that we're
0:41
going to focus on it a bit more. That's the beauty of homeschooling. So when I was looking at my father's
0:45
world exploring countries and cultures, I was told that there's not enough history. It's just a lot of
0:51
geography. Good. That's what we need. In fact, I'll have to update you when we're done with the
0:56
curriculum because they're going to have to take that same exact test again. And I'm thinking that
1:01
they're going to do a little bit better. Now we are incorporating history still this year. We are
1:06
finishing up with BJU Press Heritage Studies 5. I've mentioned to you guys, we started that last
1:11
year and we didn't finish it. So we're rolling over this year and working that into our day
1:16
along with exploring countries and cultures. But I am really excited to learn more geography this year and
1:22
really get into this curriculum. So we're two weeks in. Let me show you what we've done
1:26
so far and share with you the fun project that we're going to do today. two weeks in and we know all the continents and oceans We off to a great start Okay so I wanted to show you what we done so far for our first two weeks in and we know all the continents and oceans We off to a great start Okay so I wanted to just show you what we done so far for our first two weeks
2:06
All right, if I could get to our first page. Okay, so week one, and I'm just going to focus on the geography right now, since that's what I'm talking about
2:13
We have mainly been using the classroom atlas to learn about a lot of different types of maps. So that's where we have been starting
2:21
This book right here is what we have been using, and we've just been kind of looking through and exploring a lot about maps, learning a lot about maps, a lot about coordinates, longitude latitude, basically just being able to identify different things on the maps, learning about physical maps, climate maps, environment maps, economic activity, population density
2:51
So that is what we have done so far, just kind of given an overview of some different types of maps and exploring this Atlas a bit, which we haven't done very much of
3:03
So we've also started digging into this book a little bit, done in introduction, and we're going to get more into this as we go
3:12
And as we learn about the different countries and different cultures, talking about different religions and how we can spend time in prayer, what different people
3:21
groups believe, what they know, how it relates to Christianity, and things like that. So
3:27
these books are both going to be really great as we continue on with this curriculum. So then the
3:34
second week, which we are just finishing up, so again, you'll see this teacher guide really
3:42
breaks everything down. We talked about our different types of maps using the Atlas and just really
3:49
explore those. And then today what we're going to be doing, this is just kind of a fun activity. Before we
3:54
really get into the meat of some of the curriculum we going to be making a world cake So each of my kids are going to be making a cake and then they going to decorate it to look like the world Now I want to share with you guys We actually going to have a lot of cake here over the next two days because my older three kids all have the same birthday Only two of them are twins
4:14
But every year I love to spend some time making a special cake for each one of them. So yesterday I got
4:21
started on some of the pieces for my son's cake. I'm going to show it to you real quick
4:25
and then this weekend I'm going to be working on baking the cakes and doing some more decorations
4:30
So I've got a nice barrier here so that the dog can't get to it. But my son is going to do a Minecraft cake
4:35
And I started working on the sword and some little details in fondant
4:40
So I haven't done anything like this before. I think it is turning out okay
4:45
It's just sitting out to harden. And we'll see hopefully the finished result will be something really cool. Okay
4:51
So I'd love for you to hang out with me for just a little bit longer. my kids get into baking their cakes, I think they are going to want to have a little competition
4:59
at the end to see who can decorate the best world cake. So stick around, watch us bake
5:05
and be ready to help help me judge those at the end. All right guys, well thank you so much for watching. I hope that you enjoyed a peek at our first
7:37
two weeks of my father's world exploring countries and cultures and for joining us on our cake baking
7:43
adventure today. Don't forget to leave a comment below with which cake you think looks the best
