Welcome to week 23 of the homeschool prayer challenge. This week, the topic of reading the Bible to my kids is on my brain
0:08
Not just finding a good Bible study to do with them, but actually reading the Bible and helping them learn and understand it
0:15
So let's chat this week about this and pray for persistence in forming this habit in our homeschools
0:25
I have met and talked to many moms who have a similar story
0:29
to mine regarding their faith journey. I grew up going to church and memorizing scripture verses for
0:36
Sunday school. I did everything that looking from the outside I was supposed to do. By the world standards
0:43
I was a model Christian. I was oblivious, though, to the fact that something was severely lacking
0:51
as I set my Bible on the shelf each week to wait for next Sunday to roll around. That was if I even went to church that week
0:58
It was until I was over 30 years old that Jesus truly grabbed a hold of my heart and revealed
1:04
me the truth I was missing that was right in front of me all along. I remember sitting in a
1:10
Proverbs Bible study. My best friend was leading. I figured that I would go and I would walk away
1:15
with some good advice on how to live my life. Instead, I finished that study completely in awe of what
1:23
God has revealed to us in his word that I never even realized was there during all of my years as
1:28
a Christian and with three young kids at the time I was convicted with the realization of the eternal importance of my role in their lives God had blessed me with these beautiful kids to teach and train I realized that I didn want
1:45
them to go through their lives with just a surface level understanding of the Bible. I didn't want
1:49
them to just know of God. I knew I desired for them to love him with all of their hearts, minds
1:55
souls, and strength. Because the Bible is the way God communicates with us, it's absolutely essential
2:01
We are reading the Bible with our kids and helping them develop this discipline. He has given us his word and wants us to know him
2:08
How amazing is that? Depending on the curriculum that you're using, some of them have Bible reading time built into them
2:14
If you are using a curriculum that has this, some days you might be tempted to skip the Bible reading
2:21
in favor of getting through the subjects that the world would tell you are more important
2:26
like math or reading. I unfortunately have done this. I'm encouraging you, though, to not buy into this lie. Being in God's word is so much more important
2:36
than any other subject we could teach our kids. It's important to take a close look at your daily
2:41
routines and current efforts to make Bible study a habit with your kids. Many days, I need to do this
2:47
first before anything else gets in the way. And if you don't have Bible study built into your
2:52
curriculum or don't have a separate Bible curriculum, you can simply open up the Bible and read
2:57
this might feel overwhelming, especially if you aren't used to studying the Bible yourself. I'm going to
3:04
recommend a book to you by my friend Danica Kooley called Help Your Kids Learn and Love the Bible This is a great book that will help you create a Bible reading plan for your family It will give you confidence in handling God word along with fun and
3:18
effective tools to use during your family Bible time. I will link to it in the description of this
3:23
video and on my homeschool prayer challenge website. And if you've been following along with my weekly
3:28
Bible study printables from the prayer challenge website, this week the passage you will read and reflect
3:33
on is Proverbs 1. Why? Because after reading Danica's books last year, I was encouraged to try
3:39
something new with our family. After dinner each night, we gathered and spent 10 to 20 minutes
3:44
simply praying, reading the Bible together, and discussing what we read. My husband and I
3:49
decided to read one proverb each day, and since most of my kids are able to read, we read
3:55
Round Robin style to keep them engaged and following along. They love doing this together, and
3:59
it's a simple way to start a routine of reading the Bible with your kids. It doesn't even have to
4:04
be Proverbs. You could start with any book you'd like or find a simple reading plan to follow with your
4:09
family. But what I realized from doing this is that it doesn't have to be hard or complicated. It can be
4:15
as simple as opening God's word and letting him speak to us. Have your kids jot down in a notebook
4:20
what they learn about God after you read together. His word is powerful and will not return void
4:25
Our kids can handle it and often soak up much more than we might think
4:30
I don't have all the answers. I don't have to have all the answers or know all the right questions to ask
4:36
I can trust God to fill in any gaps I might be worried about missing
4:39
I just need to be diligent in helping my kids build spiritual disciplines that will last a lifetime It been about I don know six or seven years since that fateful Proverbs Bible study that I participated in that truly changed my life I am continually
4:55
learning and soaking up information on how to not only read and learn the Bible myself, but how to
5:01
raise my kids to be adults that love the Lord and His Word. Investing time and energy and teaching
5:07
our kids the Bible is worthwhile and necessary if we want to raise them to know and love Christ. Let's
5:13
this week that we will be intentional about sitting down as a family to dig into God's word. Let me pray for
5:18
us. Heavenly Father, I'm in awe of you, Lord, and so thankful that you've given us your word to guide us in our
5:24
lives to lead us to salvation through Jesus. There have been times that I've not been diligent in faithfully
5:30
reading your word to my kids, but it's your true word that they need more than anything. I want my kids to
5:36
know you and love your word. Give me persistence to help them develop the habit of reading the Bible
5:41
I'm ashamed to say there are days when I feel weary or that I have more important things to do
5:47
Help me to always feel the importance and urgency of feeding my children the bread of life
5:52
Thank you for creating and loving my kids and for making me their mom. I pray that they know you as their Savior and that they love your word and desire to keep your commands
6:01
Give me the tools, the ability and strength I need to guide them along this path
6:06
In Jesus' name I pray, amen. Thank you so much for watching
6:10
