Hey guys, welcome back to another video. Today. We are going to be doing one of our first form Latin lessons
0:07
So I thought I'd show you what they look like and how they are structured
0:10
So if you have considered adding Latin to your homeschool curriculum, this would be a great video to watch
0:20
Typically, I use this curriculum to teach Latin at our homeschool coop
0:24
But my little one had a fever yesterday. So we stayed home today
0:27
We have been using uh Memoria Press Latin curriculum for a few years
0:32
Now, we actually started with Prima Latina and then we did Latina Christiana and now we are almost done with first
0:41
form Latin. Before we get started, I wanted to just share a brief intro to why we are even learning Latin to begin with when
0:48
we first speak and looking into the option of homeschooling. I remember visiting a local classical conversations session and I sat in on a class
0:56
where students recited a long list of Latin declensions and conjugations. And I was intrigued
1:02
I had never thought of Latin as something that I would teach in our home school
1:06
Nor did I see the value as I became more familiar with homeschooling methods and browsed my fair share of curriculum and homeschool conventions
1:14
I saw that Latin was quite popular among homeschooler being pretty ignorant of Latin myself
1:20
I wanted to know why should I consider teaching my kids this dead language
1:24
So I began teaching Prima Latina in our homeschool co op kind of blindly
1:29
I figured it might give me a few extra cool homeschool mom points
1:33
I'm only halfway joking. One of the things that we did in that class was memorize the Sant Tooth
1:39
Latin prayer in Latin Sanctus means holy. Shortly after my son was learning John 1717 in his a a class that
1:48
verse says sanctify them by the truth. Your word is truth. And he surprised me when he recognized that sanctify was a derivative of Sanctus
1:57
And he understood that the verse was talking about being made holy
2:01
And so I started to see the value more and more in what we were learning in those early days
2:06
As we work through our lessons each week, my kids have to think through different word endings and grammar forms and they have to apply
2:13
rules with precision and really pay attention to. I don't think I realized at first just how much our grammar is based on Latin grammar
2:21
And as we've been learning Latin my kids and I understand more why we have certain grammar rules and our Latin lessons have reinforced what
2:28
we are learning in our English classes. Plus this song too. Example that I just mentioned is just one of many Latin derivatives we've encountered
2:36
since we began our studies. So many of our English words come from Latin and it's been really fun to see the vocabulary connections my
2:43
kids can now make. And since so many of the romance languages like French and Spanish have descended from Latin
2:50
learning Latinin can make it easier for my kids to learn other languages later on if they want to
2:55
Finally, I think learning Latin is fun. We have a great time in our Latin co op class each week and working through translations at
3:01
home is kind of like figuring out secret codes and messages. Plus once my kids learn that many Harry Potter spells are derivatives of Latin
3:09
words. They loved it even more. I have been really happy with the Memorial Press Latin curriculum and I think it's a great curriculum to
3:16
start with. If you are wanting to teach Latin in your home school, there are two Latin for beginners options from Memorial Press like I
3:23
mentioned. Um the first is Prima Latina and then you also have Latina Christiana
3:28
Both of them are good for beginners. Prima Latina is kind of a more gentle introduction geared for kids anywhere from about first to fourth
3:37
grade that you know, it teaches a great mix of English grammar and beginning Latin
3:42
There is less va to memorize each week in this course. So if your kids are still in the beginning stages of English grammar
3:49
this would probably be the one you'd want to start with. I first started teaching Latin in our homeschool co op when my son was
3:55
in third grade using prima Latina, which is the level right before Latina Christiana
4:00
When my girls started Latin, I wanted them to be at the same level as my son just to make it easier
4:06
So when they were in third grade, I simply had them begin at Latina Christiana and we skipped Prima with them
4:12
And that has been a good choice with Latina Christiana. This is still being a beginner Latin course
4:17
So I don't feel that they were at any disadvantage not completing Prima first
4:22
The biggest difference was more vocabulary and grammar forms to memorize in this one
4:27
So just keep that in mind, the Memorial Press, Latin courses were created by a homeschooling mom who realized the advantages of learning Latin early
4:34
on, they all come with either DVD or streaming lessons. So at first you could just get the DVD s but now I have streaming
4:41
options so you can use these to teach if you want to. But I use them really for prep and teaching each week
4:48
Since I'm teaching this in a co op, I will watch the lessons myself. So I get a feel for the pronunciations and what I
4:53
need to cover, but you could simply have your kids watch the lessons at home. If you aren't using this in a co op setting
4:59
I did not know Latin myself. But as with other things in homeschooling
5:02
it's been so much fun to learn alongside my kids. The teacher manuals are super easy to follow and they're scripted
5:10
You really just follow the steps in order and you are good to go. Ok? So now that I shared a little bit about why
5:15
we use this and why we're loving it. Let me give you a look at what an actual lesson looks like
5:21
It will look a little bit different than usual for us since we're at home and I'm not in front of a classroom
5:26
we'll just be sitting around our kitchen table. But hopefully this will give you an idea of the lesson length and flow
5:32
OK? You guys ready? This will be, this will be different, doing it on our own
5:37
right? OK. First we have to do Skkkrk
5:55
Moose personal in tense endings. O Os T Moose T ba ba ba ba
6:07
ofifbe. I ran Eras Ius tis
6:18
er er er er good job. OK. First conjugation, principal part and names O
6:29
A Avi Aus Amo principal partner beings. Amo Amare. Amadi aus OK
6:38
Amo Six tenses. Amo Amas, Amat. Aus Amati Amat. I'm a B
6:46
I'm a bath, I'm a bat. I'm a B, I'm a B, I'm a B, I'm a ho I'm a bit
6:52
I'm a bit, I'm a Vin, I'm a bit, I'm a B
6:56
I'm a, I'm a VY. I may, I'm a li I'm a V I'm ad
7:00
I'm a Vam. I'm a bar. Amara, Amara, Amara, Amara and Amaro Amari
7:10
Amari. Amare. Amaar, Amari. I can't say that a child. You traced that Q do you remember what he said is not my Yes
7:22
Good job. And uh this. Yes. Wait, wait, hold, no, hold. You guys show me how you hold it the right
7:31
way though. That was the other way. It was the right way. But what I did this
7:38
Yes. Look like me. Can you show me how you hold your
7:43
your cray the right way? Perfect. Good job, buddy. I love it
7:49
Yeah. Flip it over. Good job. All right. How about you? Rays? Did you trace those already
7:53
You did. Good job. This is the, this is the paper that you can paint
7:57
Do you remember what the cue says? We're gonna paint some quails right here
8:02
OK. What's the quail? Quail is a type of bird? OK. We'll count those in just a minute
8:08
OK, guys. Um back to our station. So we've got do ST Yvo and Lavo
8:13
Principal parts. OK? Wait, what? So do dare do da da da is
8:20
So Star ST statues, Yvo, Uva uvu and lava. Lava, la la
8:30
OK. Sum Principal Parks. Sum si beauty futurist sum in the Six Tenses
8:39
So you have Sum Ss sum si su iiiii I
8:51
ffffffffffffffff
9:04
and good. And his name? No, accusative opposite men, men, men, men
9:15
men, men, men, men, men, men, men, Serviss ser serum, servo, servi
9:25
serum servi servos servis beli belly bello, bello, Bella Bella Bellorum. Belly be bellies
9:35
Good. So we're gonna do our cardinal numbers. So. Unus duo unos
9:41
duo Tres, coo quique six septum Octa nova de OK. Those are hard for me and
9:50
then the ordinal numbers cmus, they can creus, they can induce totus Cortes
9:56
Quintus Serius Septimus octopus known as Deus. Something good. OK, guys
10:06
we're almost done. Pair patris, pair Patris pare pare pare Padres, patri
10:13
Patri. Padres, patri. OK. Two more to go. All right. So we've got no
10:20
no, this one is so hard for me, so slowly. OK. We got no man
10:27
No man, no man, no man, no man, no man, no menu
10:33
No, no, no, I have to work on memorizing. And then the one we did last week
10:39
Pus pus 4424 weight. OK. Ready PP two P two
10:50
Porto P two P two P two. Port Debus Portus. Port Deb Boo
10:58
OK. Um Good job. Oh, we should, let's try these in Latin
11:03
We're gonna count these in Latin. Let's count that you wanna, we're gonna count them for you in Latin
11:07
OK? So we've got no Trece Pato Quins septa
11:19
octo. There's eight of them and that's not a one. OK? So you guys that is uh se se what
11:31
next. OK. So that is our recitation um o of her. You know what I'm gonna do a puzzle while we're working
11:40
OK, let me get them for th you guys open up your books to lesson 26
11:47
What is, what is that Latin saying on there? You guys, you guys see me back close
11:55
Can you can even pronounce it? OK. How do you pronounce that
12:01
I in Latin it's like an E so Carpe DM which is C the day
12:06
Have you heard of it? I know you guys have heard it before. It's like it is a pretty famous thing
12:15
Carpe Diem. So every week we have our Latin saying, oh my goodness
12:23
Yes, they are. That's actually gonna be true now. So can you
12:30
hey guys, can Luke? Will you read what it says about Car DM right there in your book while I'm cutting this out
12:34
please. From one of, from one of I know that was hard from one of Horace's Odes
12:42
So it's an ode like a, I guess it's a poem. Ok. So continue
12:46
we're done. Damn. Damn. He to me make the most of today
12:53
take hold of the day and use it. Well, for tomorrow is not promised to you
12:59
Today is all you have. Ok. So that's some pretty good advice there, right
13:02
Carpet D MC is the day, right? Tomorrow is not the advantage of the day
13:07
Tomorrow is not promised. So it basically just means make the most of every day see today
13:13
Make the best of it. We are not promised tomorrow. So that's Carpe DM
13:17
OK. You gonna say that for me? Carpe D MD M OK
13:22
So Oliver, here's four pieces. Do you think you can put this together in that frame to make a P what do you think
13:28
All right, Carpe DM. Seize the Day. OK. I have some grammar questions for you guys
13:33
So let's see how much you remember from last class. The last class we talked about the fourth declension nouns
13:40
Those usually end in what? Nominative singular case ending. So what two letters
13:47
What, what is the ending for 1/4 declension noun, right? So you ask
13:51
I remember, OK, so, well, in the genitive singular but in the nominative singular
13:57
there's no map. Yeah. Oh That's right. I should get them because we do them for Latin
14:05
They are in my office in my bag because I usually give out
14:09
I usually give out candy when we're in co op class. So did you find where that's gonna go
14:18
That song? Which piece do you think is gonna go there? Yeah
14:26
There you go. OK
14:41
Now see if you can before you glue them down, see if you can match where these go, where will those go
14:45
And then we'll glue them down. You see if you can put them on here where they
14:50
and then we pick them up, pick it up, put the glue down for a second show
14:59
Me, show me, put it on here before we glue it. Show me OK
15:05
So to clench in and that's it. You did it. That's
15:14
it. Good job. All right. Now, now let's glue now that we know where they're gonna go. OK
15:18
What gender do? Four declension, what the, what gender are the four tolen nouns usually
15:25
Yes. Fourth to clench and nouns are usually masculine. However, there are two exceptions to that
15:33
Tell me without looking, no, no, no. You only get candy if you can tell me without looking
15:37
what are the two nouns that I know? This is a hard one
15:41
What are the two nouns that are exceptions to that? So they're in the fourth pension
15:45
they're in the fourth detention but they're not Nasa Close Domus which means why do house
15:52
house, home? And what about the other one? Do you remember? OK
16:01
so remember we talked about can answer
16:18
OK. There you go. OK. Leave
16:28
it, leave it, leave me. Hey, that looks really good. All OK
16:33
Guys in the fourth declension, there were four case endings ending in oops
16:40
what were they? So, so in the fourth declension, four ending endings had oops ending
16:45
So one of them, I'll start you off. One of them was the nominative singular. OK
16:51
Please tell me what the accusative um was it singular or pearl
16:58
No, I know two. OK. So no singular. This is not a question
17:04
So you tell me what it, listen I'm gonna have to put this away if you get so nosing c plural
17:12
What's one, the genitive singular? And then Carly, do you remember the last one that they
17:20
oh, I know. It's the nominative plural. So no singular if one of them just have
17:29
but it, it's still just don't cool it down. Ok. Ok. OK
17:36
Let's see. How can you distinguish between the fourth declension and the second declension and the second declension
17:42
Since they both have an ending in the nominative singular? What should you always look at when you're trying to decide the declension of a
17:50
noun? What ending do you look at? Good? The genitive singular ending
17:55
We look at that and then what is the genitive singular ending? Think back to our second declension
18:00
What did the second declension masculine have as its genitive singular ending ee or the letter I
18:06
Right? But eve OK. So in the fourth declension, what is the genitive singular ending in the fourth intention
18:15
that we just learned? What is the genitive singular ending? No, with
18:22
with the background? OK. OK. Here is I have one more question
18:27
How do you find the stem for 1/4 declension down? How do you find the stem for 1/4 declension now
18:35
Yes, you dropped the ending. Which ending like the oops from? What did you drop the ending
18:42
The ending from what? Good job. No, no. OK. OK
18:56
So let's move on to our lesson today. It's really short because like you said
19:00
like you guys already thought we were moving on to our pitch. Huh? Oh I don't have any more but I have OK
19:10
I'll OK. So this is a short lesson. We have fixed the cle um we did our Latin saying Latin thing was Carpe DM
19:20
Um OK. Do me a favor. Will you take that either downstairs in the living room while we finish this up
19:25
Right? And then we'll, yeah, we will finish that up. Once I get through Latin
19:31
we'll be done in like 10 minutes. OK. Thank you, kiddo. All right guys
19:36
So when you guys look at that fifth declension on page is everyone on page 66
19:41
OK. 1067. OK. So look at this is also the shortest stem that we are going to have
19:48
What is the stem for fifth declension? What does it say? It's R
19:53
So that's the shortest stem that we're going to have the model
19:58
No, listen, the model is just art. The model now is going to be race
20:03
That's the model. Now that we're going to use to illustrate the Clinton. Do you guys see your vocabulary down there
20:07
What does race mean? Look. Oh yeah. F around car matter and business
20:17
A lot of things. That's what race means. That's our model. Now, where do you see that
20:21
Is that OK? Down at the bottom of your vocab? Just listen
20:29
Uh Race R. Yes. Oh OK. So all nouns. If you guys look at that chart and we look at the genitive singular ending
20:38
My genitive singular ending is a. So it's E I, which we pronounce A E
20:43
OK. So all nouns is genitive singular end in A E belong to the fifth declension
20:49
So to find the stem in our fifth declension, we're going to drop the genitive singular ending A OK
20:55
So I want you guys to just look at the chart. I'm gonna read it first while you listen and then you'll recite it after
21:00
me. OK? So for fifth declension we have race re E RE E Rem Rey race Ray
21:10
Room re boo re re boo. Yeah. Ray Room that makes me like think of Scooby Doo like I feel like it's something of Scooby
21:17
Doo. I don't know. OK. Race re re re re re room re race re So
21:27
you give me look, I want you to say it along with me. OK. Let's just get it on our tongues
21:31
I used to say it. Here we go. Race ready re re re re re re I
21:41
forgot the had next to R I know you wanna say like Ray
21:47
OK. Now we're just gonna say the ending. So that's our model. Now with the endings, listen first and you try with me
21:52
Ace A eae ma. Ace Arum. Abu. Ace Abu ready try it with me AAA
22:02
ma a a A AAA. It should be a, did I say
22:11
I should be a Arum. Abu. Ace. Abu. OK. Let's try it one more time
22:18
Ace AAA ma a a AAA. So I
22:27
think the 3rd and 4th question have an end. It's in a so we have blank ec ma
22:37
Yes. So well in the outlet is singular, right? So we do
22:42
Yeah. Ace and it also has an ace um Blank E MA ace
22:49
OK. Now why am I blanking? It's ace. I let me think. Um Blank is E MA ace O
22:56
That's an Ace oeae. So it does have some similarities. That's why there's lots of kind of similarities between the declensions which kind of can
23:03
make them easier to memorize. But this is the last two you're gonna have to memorize and probably the last thing we add to our
23:07
ex, which is really good. OK. So we're gonna memorize those this week
23:12
Um Let's talk about the vocabulary. What are you doing? Oh OK
23:19
Vocab at the bottom. So we only have five vocab words. So just listen as I
23:26
as I read them out to you, we've got days, day, masculine day fie fie fie feminine
23:38
face. That is so eae so you got to say all those vowels fat for face
23:44
, I know I look at it. FF feminine
23:55
faith, trust race, ray, feminine thing, matter, affair or business space. Say feminine hope
24:03
Here was your question. Why is your dog that usually um gender except this one right here
24:11
Do you want me to write to the company? You need to vocab not vocab but like
24:20
yeah, vocab practice. Um What do we have? Do we have to say all this business
24:33
No, because it could be, yeah, it could be confused at all
24:38
OK. Let you, I want you guys to recite the book with me. OK. So remember we're gonna say the word
24:42
we're gonna say the gender and we're gonna say the definition. So actually I'll say it first and then you repeat it after me
24:48
OK. So stay, hold on. D ad A masculine
24:58
day, D ad A masculine day D
25:09
day. A feminine face, feminine face, sweet, feminine
25:18
faith, trust, trust, race, feminine thing matter. A fair business
25:33
Stay feminine hope, space, feminine hope good. OK. Turn your books over for a second
25:41
The books over. OK. Raise your hand if you can, we actually OK
25:48
tell me what does F fa mean? Is it masculine or feminine
25:56
Good job. What? OK. Carly Stay, stay means what? Hope? Good, good job
26:14
OK. OK. I know that our feminine now
26:23
let's talk about derivatives first and then we're gonna practice the endings one more time and then we will be done
26:28
OK. So look at their derivatives for D ad A E the derivative is diaries so you can flip your book back
26:35
OK. OK. So diary is a derivative. So what is a diary
26:41
Something that you write your thoughts in? That is very personal and you don't want anyone to something you record like daily thoughts in
26:48
So that is a derivative. That's where we get the word diary from D AC A OK
26:53
For FF face, the derivative is facial. So that's just anything that has to do with your face
27:00
Uh F fa derivative is fidelity. Fidelity just basically um relates to faithfulness
27:10
So if somebody is OK, fidelity is faithfulness. Um race reg e our derivative is real
27:18
So real is like it's the actual genuine, the opposite of faith
27:23
right? OK. And then space say hope. Our derivative surprisingly is despair
27:29
Which so do you guys see it? Yeah, the opposite over to be without hope to lose hope
27:34
Your despair despairing. So space spa you see where that word despair comes from that um that um real
27:45
well like action like even all over, I'm pretty
27:54
sure all. So it's like the opposite of fake, it's genuine. It's a different thing
28:04
OK? And finally, last couple things to go over in your book on page 67
28:08
You guys see that at the top. So gender rule, our fifth gender rule or our general rule for the fifth to clinch it I
28:14
should say is five DF. So what that means most fifth declension nouns are feminine
28:20
OK. The fifth declension is small and has just a few nouns
28:25
a few of them are masculine, none of them are neuter. So most are feminine
28:30
Five DF is our gender rule for the fifth Cleon. And again
28:35
just making sure you pronounce all the vowels if they were consecutive in that word
28:39
So because the, the stem and can end in the letter I
28:43
we might have that IE I, and we have to pronounce all of them
28:48
OK. Let's practice our endings one more time for the fifth declension
28:53
OK. So let's say it together and then I'll see if you guys can study them for a minute and then you can try saying
28:58
them on your own. OK. So we got AAA ma a a AAA
29:10
you think you had it already? Ace A A uh mhm A
29:24
A are um and even a a a
29:34
AAA good job. OK. Do you guys wanna try Ace A an A ace arrow
29:41
Abu A can I try? Yeah. Ace A A L OK. Yeah
29:51
Eight mhm AAA good job
30:01
That's good. Yay. OK good. You wanna try it, Carling A EPA E
30:11
doing this. Uh huh. Mhm A
30:22
yes A am. Uh huh. Yes
30:34
I you say OK, we look come over because we're gonna say goodbye
30:39
You guys wait for the camera. We are done with our lesson and we're probably gonna have some more laughing fit
30:45
So all right guys, that's it. Good job. All right, that will wrap things up for today
30:51
So after our co op lesson, my kids do have workbook activities that they have to do throughout the week
30:56
The student workbook is split into different sections per lesson. So usually I have them do just 1 to 2 sections a day to spread
31:03
it out over the week. And we also have flash cards to practice and I will do some oral drill with them occasionally as well
