Hey friends, welcome back to my channel for another video. My name is Sarah. I'm a homeschool
0:05
mama of four kids and I love talking about curriculum. Are there homeschool moms who
0:11
don't love talking about curriculum? Probably very few. Anyway, today I am going to be
0:16
unboxing some Latin curriculum from Memorial Press. So if you either love unboxing videos
0:22
or want to see what we'll be using for our next round of Latin, don't go anywhere
0:30
So yesterday I shared a do a lesson with us video of us doing a lesson from our first form Latin curriculum
0:38
If you didn't watch that, I would love for you to go and do that, mainly because I talk about why we're even studying Latin to begin with
0:46
And maybe this isn't something you've considered before. You'll also see a full lesson
0:50
So my kids and I actually sitting around our kitchen table doing a lesson together, hence the video title, right
0:56
And I think this can be really helpful if you're deciding whether or not to
0:59
use a curriculum or if it would be a good fit. We have been learning Latin with this
1:04
curriculum now for about three years. We are about to finish up our third course
1:07
which is first form Latin, and we'll be moving to second form Latin in the fall. Let me
1:12
be very clear. I am not a Latin expert. I never learned Latin growing up, but I am
1:19
learning it alongside my kids, which has been really fun and challenging, but mostly fun
1:24
This curriculum has been the perfect fit because it eased us in gently at the beginning. The
1:29
workload has kind of steadily increased as we've moved up levels but at an appropriate pace
1:35
and the amount of material that we cover each week is demanding enough without being super
1:40
overwhelming they are not overly complex lessons but they're very clear in what's being taught
1:48
so please go watch that video and you'll hear a little bit more of my thoughts on that and
1:51
who knows maybe you'll decide latin is something that you want to try or maybe if you've been
1:56
debating between a couple of different options this will help you make of your mind either for or against this curriculum. Now if you aren't super familiar with
2:05
Memoria Press, they are a family-run publishing company and they create classical Christian
2:11
curriculum. A woman named Cheryl Lowe founded this company about 30 years ago, I believe in 1994
2:18
and their curriculum has won all sorts of awards and is used by homeschoolers and many private
2:22
schools. So Cheryl is actually the author of this Latin curriculum and I remember reading when I first
2:29
researched this that she believes Latin has more educational value than any other subject you can
2:35
teach your kids. I'm not sure that I am quite to that level of Latin intensity yet, but I have found
2:41
that there are many benefits to learning Latin that go beyond just knowing the language. And I talk
2:47
a little bit about that in my other video as well. Okay, so I am excited to open up this box of
2:51
second form Latin curriculum. I haven't opened it yet and ordered it when there was a sale
2:56
running a while ago so I hope everything is in here I will I show you guys everything that comes with this curriculum and I thinking I very briefly take a look and see how similar it is to our current curriculum and what my first impressions are So here we go
3:24
All right, so you guys, I have way too much curriculum here. I have way too much curriculum here. I have. I have aumbus. I have
3:28
the wrong box sitting here that's something I'm going to do another day this double
3:33
checking is my Memorial Press curriculum so let's open this up and see what we got
3:44
the first things that I see is we have second form Latin flashcards nice big stack of those
3:57
right here. This all comes in a kit that I purchased. You can buy all these things
4:01
separately but I buy the whole package and then I add on a couple things because
4:05
like three older kids do this curriculum so you can buy everything separately but
4:10
this is everything if you buy the whole second form Latin package and I definitely
4:14
would recommend flashcards if you are purchasing the curriculum. I have had my
4:18
kids make their own flash cards in the past it's so much easier if you just have
4:22
that set of flash cards. Okay we also have the second form
4:27
pronunciation CD. So they do have, I believe I bought the streaming options. So they do have
4:34
this online where I can log into my account and get all of the pronunciations and the lessons
4:40
streamed online. They used to send a DVD for the lessons, but I believe it's all online now
4:47
They actually just came out with an app now as well. So I did download the app and I can see
4:52
all of my lessons on the app. A Memorial Press calendar. That must have been a free add-on
5:03
Oh, I forgot I got these. These are, you can get nice little certificates for your kids when they finish up the course
5:10
So it's nice, heavy-duty card stock. I did get certificates for my kids for when they finish the class that we are currently
5:16
doing, first form Latin. So there's a certificate for my kids in there. Okay
5:25
We have the second form Latin. teacher key and this looks very similar to our current curriculum for first form
5:33
So for every lesson they kind of split it into half pages but they give the answers in
5:38
here so you can follow along and check your kid as they go
5:44
So there is a teacher key. The trustee teacher manual, second form Latin teacher manual
5:52
I will look through this a little bit more in a second
5:56
Okay, student workbook. And I should have a couple of these So I got one to two student workbooks three Four Okay so I did order four I actually order four workbooks I only have three kids but the fourth one is for me because since I learning this alongside with my kids I like to go through and do all the workbook lessons so that when I teaching I have a really good understanding And I want to learn it too So I order an extra workbook for me
6:31
so that I can do it with my kids. Okay, there is an extra book for quizzes and tests
6:41
So these are just blank tests and quizzes. You can make copies of these for your kids that are using them
6:49
And again, if you want to use them. We don't keep grades at the moment really right now
6:54
but I do use their quizzes and tests to kind of make sure that they are remembering their words
7:01
their grammar forms, and it kind of gives them motivation to study when they know that they're going to
7:06
have a quiz or a test over it, because it's really important to be memorizing the vocabulary
7:12
and the different grammar forms that we're using. So I do use those. Okay, and then, yes, I have
7:18
three student textbooks. I get one for each of my kids that are doing this course. So three
7:26
student textbooks. Now with this package if you were to buy it just for one student, oh
7:34
then there's an extra calendar in here. Okay. If you were to buy it just for one
7:38
student, it would come with, get this out of the way, so you would get one textbook
7:46
you would get your teacher manual, your quizzes and tests, you would get the
7:54
pronunciation CD and your flashcards, and then you would get one student workbook as well
8:00
So I just added on the extra textbooks and then the extra student books
8:05
All right, and like I said, I purchased the online streaming option
8:10
so it makes it really easy to be able to log in and view the lesson
8:14
I kind of talked about this in my other video. I don't have my kids watch the lessons
8:19
You certainly could do that, but I teach this through our homeschool co-op, so there's a few kids that I am teaching this to
8:25
in addition to mine. And I watch the videos mainly so I know how to pronounce things
8:30
I know how I'm kind of going to teach it. And that's what I use those for
8:34
But if you're doing this at home, you certainly could use the lessons and either watch them with your kids or have your kids watch them
8:41
And it's a great tool to have. I love if I just look through this manual, the lessons are so straightforward in what we're doing right now and very scripted out
8:54
And it just makes it so easy. to teach. It looks like we have five units and 26 different lessons plus some review
9:06
I will say the first form teacher manual is spiral bound and I like that a lot more I not super thrilled that it not spiral bound
9:16
I just like to be able to lay my books flat, but this will do
9:21
It looks very similar to the other teacher manual that I have
9:26
So they have basically the student book is in the middle right here and each lesson is on
9:32
one page. So if I flip to the next page, yeah, it goes to the next lesson. So you have one page
9:38
per lesson and then all your teacher notes are kind of on the side of the pages. And again
9:43
it's very scripted, tells you exactly what you should be saying and what order you should be
9:49
saying it in. And it really doesn't go too far off from what they have on the streaming lessons
9:56
It's pretty much word for word. There may be a couple things added in there. But again
10:02
It makes it very easy to teach. So the structure looks exactly the same, which makes me really happy because it's going
10:09
to be familiar and comfortable to us. The student textbook, again, it's nice because the lessons are not overwhelming
10:18
There are usually just two pages per lesson, and the kids will get some kind of Latin saying
10:26
They will have some kind of grammar form that you're working on that week
10:31
will have new vocabulary words, usually about 10 words or so they'll have to memorize that week
10:36
and then any extra grammar notes or things that they need on the other page
10:40
And that's, you know, those two pages cover that week's worth of lessons
10:45
And then after we learn the lesson, we usually do one day of teaching that week, and then
10:50
the rest of the days we will go in and there's usually five or six different sections in here
10:56
for each chapter so they can go in their student work with then and practice
11:01
So for example, one of the lessons, you kind of see it broken down
11:06
So there's a section there, a section there kind of breaking it into manageable chunks, and
11:11
I'll usually just have my kids work on a section a day, so it's short and sweet, along
11:16
with practicing their vocabulary and things like that. Okay, so there you have it
11:24
Second form Latin. I am really excited to continue teaching the series, and I hope maybe I've inspired you
11:31
you to think about teaching Latin in your home school or even take a look at some of the other
11:36
curriculum and resources Memorial Press has to offer. I will of course leave links in the
11:40
