I don't know about you guys, but when we decided we were going to homeschool our kids
0:04
the question that quickly came was, what exactly am I going to teach them
0:08
As a former public school teacher, I knew all about how to research the state standards and what
0:13
my kids should be taught. I thought it would be as easy as simply choosing a curriculum that would help my kids meet
0:19
those standards so they could eventually learn enough to be able to get a job and be successful
0:25
citizens and adults. Now, at the time, I was growing in my newfound relationship with Christ and knew that we
0:31
definitely needed to include a Bible study component as well. I mean, the beauty of being able to homeschool was being able to incorporate teaching the Bible
0:40
to my kids, right? I realize now, though, that at the time, I extremely oversimplified that thought because
0:46
I've learned that the Bible isn't just a course that we get to check off our list each day
0:52
It's our worldview, the lens with which we can view every single thing we learn about
0:56
about in our homeschool. I realized that the end of our homeschool journey isn't just about graduating
1:02
the kids and making sure that they have a successful career someday. And that raising my kids in a
1:07
Christian homeschool environment is not simply a prayer at the beginning of the day and some
1:12
scripture copywork sprinkled in. Nothing wrong with that, by the way, but it's about so much more
1:23
I didn give much of a thought to worldviews before before we began homeschooling but especially within the past few years how we all view and respond to the world has become much more
1:33
interesting to think about. Whether we realize it or not, our worldview shapes everything we do
1:38
It shapes the decisions that we make in our homeschools, from the curriculum we purchase
1:44
to how we teach that curriculum, to the activities we participate in, and the conversations
1:49
that we simply have throughout the day. For example, as a Bible believing Christian, I view the world through the lens of the Bible, which I believe is the infallible word of God. I believe that we were created by God for the purpose of fellowship with him, for knowing him, loving him, and serving him. This worldview is the foundation on which I can build our homeschooling goals and better yet explain to my kids the purpose for their education. When I think about teaching my kids in our homeschool, I want to focus on more
2:19
than just choosing materials that will help me teach the right things. I should be asking myself
2:25
if the learning materials that I'm choosing help me point my kids to Christ. And even if they
2:31
don't specifically do this, how can I help them learn more about God in the amazing world
2:36
he has created through our lessons? When we shift the purpose of our learning from achieving good
2:43
grades and getting a job although yes important But when we shift that to knowing and glorifying God which is more important everything changes the question from our kids is no longer why do we have to learn this or why do we
2:56
have to do school today but how can what i'm learning help me to glorify know and serve christ
3:02
and others or what can we learn about god and his nature from what we are studying those are
3:07
definitely more thought-provoking questions and give us a greater purpose in what we are doing so this
3:13
week I am encouraging you to consider how are you approaching the subjects that you
3:17
teach in your homeschool what is the ultimate goal of your homeschooling and does
3:21
that shine through not just the curriculum that you choose but also your
3:25
mindset and attitude about what you are teaching how will you glorify God this
3:30
week through what you're teaching your kids how will you help them see him as
3:33
the author of all the subjects you learn about these can be hard things to reflect on
3:37
be prayerful and ask your Heavenly Father to guide you in keeping the ultimate
3:41
goal of your homeschool in mind Pray for wisdom and choosing materials that will support your worldview
3:47
build that strong foundation, and help you train your kids to love God, know him well, and do his will
3:53
Let me pray for us. Heavenly Father, you are sovereign over all the pieces of our lives, including our homeschools
4:01
I praise you for holding us and guiding our family as we navigate each homeschool day
4:08

4:19

4:24
homeschool, so our choices honor and please you. Guide me in decisions that will build a firm
4:30
foundation for raising powerful arrows that stand against the enemy and bring glory to you
4:35
above all i desire for you to be first in my life help me to rest in your sovereignty not putting my
4:44
trust in my own efforts or in physical things but in you alone let us see your eternal power and
4:49
character clearly in everything we study and learn about this week you are amazing lord in jesus
